  1. Hi,

New to the group so apologies if this is a common question. Just bought a mtb and ride to work 3 or
4 times a week. My journey is half along the canal towpath and half by road. The towpath section
isn't really like off road, it's quite a well maintained section. What I'd like to know is what
difference road tyres (slicks?) would make if I fitted them to my bike. Would it reduce my journey
time? (currently about 50mins each way). Would the riding be easier?

    Ta for any advice

    Nigel

  2. It would make riding easier and quieter, may reduce time. Have your tyres fairly hard too, to reduce
    resistance.

Not only faster and/or easier but more pleasant as you'll lose the high frequency buzz generated by
kernobblies. Also cornering at speed is more pleasant on a road tyre as there are no kernobbly bits
to squirm around giving sketchy feedback.

Everyone will have their favourites to recommend, mine are Panaracer Pasela
    1.25".

  4. I can recommend Specialised Fatboys which are completely bald 100 psi tyres which I've used on my
MTBs for years. They're durable too.

At least an oodle and possibly a Several of oodles :-)

    Probably

    Definitely.

Choose carefully: one with an aramid (e.g. Kevlar) band is Highly Recommended. Most bike shops
stock a decent range, you want one rated to at least 100psi. Expect to pay more than you do for
    cheap gnarlies
    - good high pressure tyres are not cheap, but they do last.

I'll second that. They are great tyres, fast, quiet, and pretty robust too.

What are they like in the wet?

  8. They are as good as anything in the wet. It is total myth that bike tyres need to have a pattern to
grip in the wet. I've been cycling bald tyres here in Ireland which is not dry at all at all at all
at all for 15 years and I can assure you of that!!!

That's two out of three. The gentle hum of "kernobblies" is one of the pleasures of cycling!

I recommend Schwalbe City Jets. Quiet, beeyootiful ride, and dead cheap. C+ gave them 9/10 a
    while back.

  10. Road tyres also slip less on wet manhole covers - knoblies can be frightening. My choice would be
    Schwalbe Marathon or City Marathon.

Your road tyres may vary. IME wet manhole covers are in and of themselves frightening.

60-85 is OK. Panaracer hiRoad, Specialised ES etc. Theres not that many at much over 100psi rating.

No manhole cover is even more frightening!

I've had a pair of Panaracer Paselas (1.2"😉, they were good, but seemed to crack and decompose in
the UV (maybe not such a problem under grey skies)

Tioga city slickers seem good too, they're the tyres of choice on my bike at the moment.

I did like IRC metros, but found them a bit soft and prone to picking up and keeping lots of
    slivers of glass.

No manhole so fierce but knows some touch of pity. But I know none, and therefore am no manhole.

Isn't that what you were getting at, Guy?

That's why mine are lasting then, they're on my winter hack. However, the Conti GP 3000s on my best
bike are cracked to b*ggary after a year, any recommendations for replacements anybody?
