disc brake upgrade

get the disc....disc are better then V brakes in almost everyway, *dont get dirty as fast, dont wear out as fast, brake better, ect.* its just going to pay off alot better if u just buy a pair of AVID mechanical disc...since you alrdy have everything you need to use the disc...

Speaking as one who has used both modes in races and commuting, you would notice a difference favoring hydraulics. That difference may or may not be worth the price jump. To me it is since it takes a much reduced hand force, good for carpal tunnel. For entry level work and reduced cost, Avid mechs will more than fill the bill. They are by far the best mechanicals and easiest brake to service.
For hydraulics, Avid makes a good unit but Shimano 525 is more bang-per-buck. I just bought a set for my second race bike because I like them so much. $200 for the set.

Avid mech disks are great. Don't believe anyone who tells you they're not as powerful as hydros. In terms of bang for your buck there's no competition.

I have Shimano mechanical discs and have no complaints - plenty of braking power and they don't need constant adjustment. Quiet too.

I agree with Nick, Avid mechanicals are much better than V-brakes. Much less hand fatigue on those long downhills. I went from XTR to the Avids and never went back. True one-finger braking. I use XTR levers that have the adjustable leverage control.
