I'm remembering that some "real" IQ tests used in schools don't go past 140, or maybe not even that high. The higher the maximum score, the longer the test needs to be (all else being equal), and there's really no point to knowing whether somebody is 135 or 140 or 145 in a school setting. They are smart; there are other things that will determine how successful they will be.

You are correct on that, since at the end of second grade I took a test to see if I should skip third and got a score of 128 and I took it as just another test/game. Kids at that age aren't that concerned anyway so there is going to be a large variance. I doubt that a second grade test could go much beyond 130 or so. It is after all only a number, since the brightest kid can also be the biggest goof off. Bill Baka

True enough. What's practical and sensible about IQ testing doesn't need to be particularly precise or to cover all the extremes.
Then there's those of us who just like tests. Some people buy books of TImes of London crosswords and others grab IQ tests, which tend to be a lot easier.
