Hmmm, if I were a betting man, and I am not, you personally could not
even qualify to ride in the TdF let alone win a single leg or even dream
of winning the entire race.

Personally I think as cyclists, we here, in a group like this, should
wish Lance well in his retirement.

cs.umass.edu address for at least three years. Pretending to be someone
else is the only way Red Cloud can get any attention from NG regulars.

Man, you are just consumed by hatred and jealousy. There is no doubt
that you are an prime example of a tormented little man, who has no
life, no friends, no heart, and no future.

Do yourself a favor and end it all. Most people, I would recommend
they seek help, but in your case, why waste everyones time. Make a
statement, get a yellow shirt and throw yourself off the tallest
building you can find. Of course, there is a very strong likelyhood
that you are already locked up, and your time here, represents your
computer privileges. If you are free, remember - yellow shirt, tall
building, big jump.

Personally, I did not know who the hell Lance Armstrong was until I
bought a bike and started posting on this newsgroup this year. I
started hearing of him a little when he was diagnosed with cancer, and
then when he started dating a celebrity even more people heard of him.
Let's face it, he was not a major sports figure in the USA.

I know that for all of you avid cyclists he has been very MAJOR, but
not for those who never followed the sport.

Bicycle racing has grown in the public consciousness of the United
States over the last several years. The reason being the success Lance
Armstrong in the Tour de France. There is now a new group of American
cycling fans.

One author, I forget his name, is capitalizing on the current
popularity of Lance Armstrong, by writing a book of basic understanding
of the sport of cycling and what he describes as "The Greatest Race in
the World," the Tour de France.

I wish Lance Armstrong well because he is a fellow human being. Not
because he is a cyclist. He has been through a hell of a lot and came
up smiling, shining and a winner. His determination, dedication and
passion for life in general will long be admired. He may retire from
cycling, but he will go on to accomplish much more in his life. He is
that kind of person.

Well, he was Sports Illustrated's "Man of the Year" and gets mentioned
on all the TV and radio sports reports throughout the various TdFs. I
would guess that 99 percent of Americans at least know who he is, which
more than you can say for a lot of baseball/football stars.

But yes, bike racing isn't exactly a mainstream sport in the US. I
think part of the problem is that people consider bike racing too easy,
maybe even boring. After all, nearly everyone can ride a bike, but they
can't hit 50 home runs or make a running/diving catch in. When you see
the pro peloton rolling along at 25+ mph they don't even seem to be
working hard. Those of us who actually ride bikes know otherwise.

Road cycling has become more popular as a result of Armstrong's
success, and that may be a good thing. The problem is that many new
recreational cyclists seem to think bicycling is all about suffering
and "training" instead of an enjoyable form of exercise and adventure.
Look at the photos in the bike catalogs; everyone looks so serious!

Look at a photo of me on a bike. Serious could never describe it. I
don't think there is a word in the English language that could describe
it. ;-)

I think photos in the catalogs and magazines are a little intimating to
the average person who just wants to ride for the fun of it.

A friend of mine said when I do my 25 mile charity ride, not everyone
will look like Lance. Alot will look like Nicky Nork. I laughed my
ass off. I will feel comfortable if they look like dorks. If they look
like the guys in the TdF....I am leaving. FAST!!!!

I will only bike as long as I find it fun. When it ceases to be
fun.....it's gone, I'm gone.....hopefully that will never ever happen.
