  1. Fourth of July. The wife is upstate with her family, hanging out with friends is going to happen
tomorrow. Tonight it's just me and the Airedale.

I take the dog out for a walk in Riverside Park while the lamb stew cooks and the beer chills.
Manhattan on the summer holidays, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, is totally unlike its
usual self. Especially on the Fourth of July. All the upper west side yuppies are out of town in the
Hamptons or upstate or something. Except for me. There's probably twenty open parking spaces on my
block, it's that empty. And normally high-tone Riverside Park has been invaded by all the folks from
Harlem and Washington Heights who c can't afford to weekend in the Hamptons. The park is totally
changed. Families congregate around huge spreads of food, salsa music blares,

everywhere, boom-boom knockout Latina chicks are cooing over the dog. The Harlem crowd swoops in
like a breath of fresh air. The dog is wiggling with glee (and who wouldn't be, getting all that
attention from the girls?) I'm wearing a big grin myself. Smell the pozole,

After dinner and a few beers, it's time to ride. I strap on the Niterider and hop on the fix and
head downtown. Traffic is light, which is a damn good thing, because I'm feeling pretty slow and
full and beery. I fall into an easy pace on the fix and cut off the street and onto the Greenway at
72nd St. There's a few cyclists out, not too many. It is very humid. I look east at 34th St., and
the horizon is alive with fire. I turn and head east. The Empire State building rises in front of
me, blazingly illuminated. Behind, on the East River, the sky crackles with fireworks, a wall of
sparks and flame framed by the skyscrapers of Midtown. I move up the street in a languid spin on the
fix. It is beautiful and overwhelming. I ride east on 34th Street. My heart soars. I no longer hear
the traffic. I am bathed in light. Buoyed by light. Propelled by light.

The best way to get to and from a massive urban fireworks display is by mountain bike. Even if
there's no singletrack, air or mud to write about.

Amazingly beautiful picture you paint of Manhatten with the fireworks display , CC . I can
picture the colors exploding and reflecting off the mirrored windows of those skyscrapers
    in my mind .

Speaking of dogs , My neighbor has a Samoyd ( picture a Norweigen Elkhound , only solid white with
a lot of hair ) . That breed has a very friendly disposition and absolutely loves attention .
Occasionally we will ride to the local park with the Samoyd on a leash leading the way . That dog
is one hell of a babe magnet and we have had a few over for BBQs and MTB rides .

    Nice RR , Corvus . M&M

Yeah. Not for the first time I'm impressed by the way this guy can paint an emotional picture with
    words. Thanks mike

Nice RR. My friend lives in a Spanish neighborhood and the women are amazing.
