  1. Hi

My Mavic 517 rim has developed cracks. I would be utterly grateful for advice on how long I can
expect it to last. Will it blast on a long down hill? Or just anytime? Or last for years? Include
    two shots of it w1.185.telia.comtillf1.jpg

I've never seen a catastrophic failure from this. The cracks are never uniform and usually they just
slowly detension the wheel as each spoke hole begins to fail. It's certainly finished and I'd say
replace as soon as you can afford it. You could probably ride it for a few weeks like it is now, but
    you're tempting fate.

    Cheers,

    Scott..

How willing are you to find out the hard (landing) way?

    Quoted message said:

It could under the right circumstances.

    Quoted message said:

    Or just anytime?

It could eventually fatigue to the point of failure if you continue to ride on it.

    Quoted message said:

    Or last for years?

If you don't ride on that rim, it should last the rest of your lifetime. If you continue to ride on
it, it could shorten and end your lifetime. Easy $50/€50ish choice.

I say replace as soon as you can. It's not worth finding out if it'll self-destruct on you at speed
or in traffic. A new rim is a lot less expensive than wrecking your bike, as well as a possible trip
to the hospital and/or a funeral.

It is not too easy, we are just about to go to the US, to ride, this wheel has a 32h rim, and I
would have to have it rebuilt with a new rim in just a couple of day, I might be able to do that.
And alternative would be to use another wheel, got a 28h bontrager wheel with a beautiful CK hub.
However, that rim i pretty worn too, though not cracked, and may have to be replaced. Are Bontrager
Race Lite MTB ceramic rims widely available and can I depend on finding a good wheel builder
somewhere in Colorado. Problem with that wheel is that is 28h which can be difficult to find.

If you're about to go on a cycle vacation to Colorado from another country I'd agree with cyclist101
and replace it immediately. If it's a 32h rim as you say, any shop worth it's salt would be able to
rebuild that for you in a few hours. Mavic 517's or equivalents are as common as dirt generally. I
would definitely do it now. Why burn your vacation time up by having to perform an emergency job in
a foreign country where you know nothing about the shops?? Waste it now at home and get it done. If
it were my shop and you explained about your vacation, I'd do your wheel immediately for you. Things
like that mean a lot to a customer. If it's impossible, take heart. Colorado has plenty of bike
shops, including Peter Chisholm's shop Vecchio's in Boulder, a frequent and knowledgeable
contributor here. I'm sure you can get the job done there in a day if he has MTB rims in stock.

    Cheers,

    Scott..

I prefer ceramic rims, last better, and they are not always readily available, but I believe it is
    easier to find a 32h than a 28h.

True, I will either try to get it fixed in Stockholm before this week. Or take the other rear wheel,
though I am not too keen on travelling with a 28h rim that is pretty worn.

It's done. Replace it now. OK, it might not suddenly collapse under you next week, but it will be
impossible to keep true. Replace it with a rim that does not have that anodizing coat on it, and it
    will last longer.

It may last months but will get less true until it's unrideable. I replaced a road rim with similar
probs last Sunday. It had been developing for many months and was getting unfashionably (but not yet
dangerously) untrue. It took me a few hours. If you can afford to go on an overseas riding holiday,
you must afford the new rim - NOW. Mark Lee

Of course, it more a matter of where to rebuild the wheel.

Not years, what is going to happen is it's going to go outta true at the cracks and no amount of
tensioning is goling to make it true again...time for a rebuild, maybe using Velocity rims.

    Thanks Peter

I would like to change the rim. It may be OK for low speed technical singletrack in the Swedish
woods but I would feel distinctly uncomfortable doing those long fast ascents you got in Colorado,
as it will get extremely hot.

I like Mavic ceramic rims. This one has done some 12000 - 14000 km, in the Alps and in SE Asia,
mostly with heavy panniers. So I would like to replace it with a 517 or 618 or 521 ceramic. I will
try to fix it in Sweden before we leave but if I cannot I will mail you. Take it that it would not
be any problem to bike from Golding or Denver to Boulder with it.

I guess you enjoy using rims that fail prematurely. 14000 km is an unacceptable life for a rim. I
have more than double that on my current rims, with no signs of cracking. What part of "ceramic rims
    are junk" don't you understand?

That really depends what it is exposed to. This rim has done a lot of Alpine singletrack
user.tninet.seSingleTrack2000.htm, two long journeys in South-East
Asia (some of it on extremely rough roads)
    user.tninet.seCyclinginsoutheastasia.html, and some winter
riding in Swedish woods user.tninet.seEnglish.html. Had one accident in South
Vietnam, the tire exploded, and it became untrue. The present problem may have started there,
although I think it is more likely that I got a stick into it somewhere in the woods. Does not take
much bad luck to break any rim. My wife´s rims who has been through about the same are in perfect
    condition.

I think ceramic coated rims are more durable.

Rims shouldn't break unless exposed to huge forces- like getting run over by a truck. It is not bad
luck. Cracking around the spoke holes is a failure caused by poor rim design, and has become
depressingly common thanks to rims being designed by marketing departments rather than engineers.

They aren't. But then you could Google-search this newgroup for about 35,000 posts on this topic in
the past 10 years. It's really not worth going into yet again, IMHO.

Or sustained braking when riding in dirt.

Getting a branch into a wheel is rarely done on purpose.

I find they are, mine have lasted much longer than other rims. However, of course, that is
impressionistic. Has some one studied it more scientific methods?

Without being a wheel engineer I think it is safe to assume that there is a trade-off between
    durability and weight.

More accurately, there is a trade-off between prudent engineering design and "features" demanded by
    marketing.
