  1. I am thinking of doing a bit more extreme trails this year, ones that could
be painful if I fall off or roll.

Regardless of the bike, what all would you suggest? Besides the head(I
already wear a helmet), what are other key areas to protect?

Where would I be able to get the stuff you suggest?

And yes, In my province in Canada, we do have free health care.

    Thanks,

    Micheal

    Dianese is excellent, but...
On a trip to Spain last year I found that their freeride/clip-on leg armour
would move around a lot - making it hard to ride in for any distance.
My friend on the other hand had bought a set of these:
    http://tinyurl.com/3vqmd
    They're TSG Dalco knee/shin pads.

He had no problem wearing them all day and riding on single-track &
climbing - something a lot of body armour isn't geared for.

Anyway, I bought a set when I returned for DH, and they really are very
good. The lycra grips well and stops downward slippage, whilst the leg
straps add additional securing to avoid movement on a major off - I know
    I've tried them out ;o)

For arm armour in Spain I used these:
    http://tinyurl.com/5k2y3
Which proved to be a perfect blend of security and ease of use. Definitely a
good compromise if you're planning on doing XC style riding.

As an aside, I use a 661 pressure suit for DH top armour - cheaper than
Dianese, and has saved me a few times. If you're serious about falling off,
then do make sure you get armour with a back protector! And a serious lid!

Hehe, you'll have a hard time getting serious answers on this. Personally
I don't wear "armor", but if I were to it'd depend on how I expect I might
    crash.

If its a lot of dangerous downhill (especially in rocks), I'd think about
a full-face helmet and maybe shoulderpads (you hear a lot about broken
collarbones). I've seen people wear back plates, which I guess might help
if you're expecting long falls and maybe a stem in the chest.

My shins are all scarred up from contacts with pedals & various parts
during emergency stops in tricky sections...I suppose shin pads could
help. I don't think I've ever landed on a knee, but some wear knee/shin
combos. Personally, I just live with the scars; they're nice tatoos.

The only padding I've ever worn is a neopreme band (actually a small knee
brace) on my elbow/forearms. I tended to land on those a lot. I only used
them for a couple of months; then I learned to crash less.

You can bet that whatever you choose will be very uncomfortable and will
make you look more and more like a Star Wars storm trooper. And if you
ride beyond your control enough, you will eventually be injured regardless
of how well armored you are. BTW, not all injuries heal...

I'm not doing dewd drops or anything, but after years of bashing my
knees and shins ugly I started using some old Hammer neoprene shin/knee
pads. They do a decent job, though I think I schvitz out several pounds
through my ankles. During the winter they're great.

    Indeed it is worrying!

Still, the way I see it, I can be as whacked out strange as I like (read

  13. hmm well im mainly a cross country rider...but the trails can get extremely dangerous so i bought my self some leg protection as there the most important part as far as riding is consernd...and there just some cheap 20 dollar 661 knee/and shin guards...but yeah they work great...they dont move or anything just they can get a lil stiff wen riding but i dont excpect them to be perfect as they were cheap...id recammend looking at the for startrs...and long sleeve shirt works for most arm cuts from plants...cuz usually a rock doesnt tear up your arm but ur legs instead...and some good gloves with a good helmet and you should be fine...all i have to say is be aware of were your riding excpect to fall everywere you go so you know what to do and wat direction to roll off to if you do...and youl be fine...just go out and have fun!

Almost every trail I ride could be painful if I fall or roll off, and
I haven't even been riding for two years ... so I wonder if your
definition of "painful" is different than mine. Are you worried about
body parts breaking/shattering/hemmoraging, or are you just worried
    about some nicks and scrapes?

Maybe you should go check out the trails you're talking about and see
what other people are wearing. That will probably give you a better
    idea than asking here.

Most wear what i currently wear, clothes. I just want to not have to walk
certain areas for fear of crashing into solid granite.
