A housemate's bike is making funny noises. Tracked it down to an out of true wheel making the knobbles on the tyres rub against the gear cable. Also noticed that the wheel is sitting quite far forwards in the wheel holding dooberries (er, just click on the picture).
Is this ok like this? Anything wrong with putting the wheel as far back into them as possible (it'll make the tyre nobbles clear the gear cable without me needing to true the thing - everything seems loose on the wheel and I'm not sure what'll happen once I start fiddling :-).
Whoever last took the wheel off seemed to think it should go back in the same position, but looking at the damage they did to the bolt makes me think they weren't a mechanic.

All things being equal, the wheel should sit right back in the dropouts on both sides. Things will then need adjusting to suit, e.g. brake blocks on the rims.

That's usually better.
Horizontal dropouts are now much less common than they used to be, largely because it's so easy to set up a wheel not-quite-square in the frame. Better quality horizontal dropouts used to have an adjustment stop screw running through the end, so that it was easier to set the wheel up square.

I would want it at least a little bit further on to be sure it was secure. But there's no reason why the axle has to go right back in the dropouts, but also no reason why it shouldn't, if that's the way you want it.
Thanks chaps. When I tried to move it back I noticed the rear mech was held on by the same bolt that held the wheel on, and also by a screw that went though the rear of the drops and into a weird nut thing. This stops the wheel going all the way to the back of the drops. Still, taking the whole thing apart to see exactly what was going on was time well spent, as after sticking it back together there's no rubbing on the gear cable.
