What???

I think you mean the Tour de Georgia. Gotta hurt to go from nothin to
sumthin to nothin in the span of 1.5 years. Maybe they'll clip the
Fogelites at the next Fresno crit and bring home some glory.

Unless Fuentes (who is racing under an assumed named) shows up.

This is [censored]. If they wanna grow pro cycling in America, all domestic
UCI teams should be in. I understand the Lance factor, but flying in
every team that has an American on it is unnecessary and ultimately
hurts sponsorship of domestic teams.

If they wanted to grow cycling they would invite developmental teams to
the Tour of Georgia. Oh wait, they did. Never mind...

They should have all US based UCI registered teams that will pay the
start fee on the line.

I would expect MUCH better out of you. Are you just having a bad day?
Weren't you one of the LEADING complainers when REIGNING WORLD CHAMP
MARIO was shut out of the 2003 TdF so some local French farm teams
could race in The Show?
TdG doesn't need HACKS like you or me to become HUGE. It does need the
5 US riders who lead Pro Tour teams to be there. It does need LA. It
does need Mario-types. I'll forgive you today. Maybe you stayed up all
night to mourn the Pope, or something.

Dear Sir,
I am a HUGE fan of your postings here and although I generally stick to
lurking I am going to have to argue this one.
(I can feel the beatdown coming my way already).
How does having any one other than Lance at the race help it? Who is
coming to see Bobby, Floyd, et al, who wouldn't come to see Lance?
Oh yeah, and I certainly wouldn't argue on behalf of hacks like me, but
maybe I would for you.
I don't remember complaining about Cipo not being in the Tour although
that makes some sense to me... In any case, that was awhile ago and I
really don't care about euro-trash cycling as much these days. Yes, I
know it was only a couple years back...my attention span is that short.

Hello again,
I do think that there will be people coming to see Bobby, Floyd,
Levi, and of course Lance et all at the Tour of Georgia. I have heard
lots of people talking about it, and they are excited to be able to
see all of the "top" American pro riders all riding against one another
in Georgia. I do agree with you to a certain point (even though my
semi-sarcastic post might say otherwise) that ALL of the American pro
teams (DIII or whatever they are calling them these days) should be at
the start line of the TdG. It just makes sense. But this race needs
sponsorship dollars to make it happen, and sponsorship dollars roll in
with big names (Bobby, Lance, Levi, and Floyd), and I'm sure that
the sponsors would possibly NOT want to make large monetary
contributions to the race if the "big guns" weren't at the start line.
Know what I mean? And the aforementioned racers seem to be a little
bigger than the lineup at Webcor at this point in time.

Wow, you just made an argument for the ProTour.
Or rather, for making the US ProCyclingTour just like the UCI Pro Tour.
Get rid of (almost) all wildcard spots for the biggest races.
Require the big teams to show up.
Happy sponsors are the key to growing the sport and keeping it healthy.
They can't require big teams to show... but they can pay them to.
No sponsors will back out as long as Lance is around. Maybe they are
thinking long term and trying to make some other guys names known well
enough to keep the show running.
If you want to keep US team sponsors in the sport, you can't deny them
the start of the races that actually get publicity.

This is similiar to the annual Philly debate. Should Euro's be shut out
of the USPRO Road Championship? Should ALL US pro's, no matter how
pathetic, be allowed to start there. The answer there is yes/no. They
have done it for 20 years, surviving the title sponsor getting bought
out THREE times, so I say their formula for success, despite the flaws,
is there. You can't shut down a Major City so Ryan and I duke it out,
when both of us will probably drop out anyway.
Have you looked at some of those scab pro 3rd rate, 3rd division teams
that they call PRO in the states lately? Even if they have $10,000 to
buy their way in, it doesn't make it right. Georgia's solid formula for
sucess is as follows. It has State support (Tobacco settlement
money/tourism board, Sponsorship from Corporate US (Dodge), AND
benefits a cause (GCC-cancer). Heck, is what the state's idea to start
the race.
They need major media. That means LA, ALL the top US Pros, and a
smattering of top foreign speaking guys to give the average good'ole
boy in Georgia a taste of something worldly. Remember, it is a
backwater state outside of Atlanta. The locals are attracted to it,
like a spaceship landing has occured. The internal state news is go see
something that NEVER comes through your rick-shack town. The external
state news exposure is come see our state. Bring the family to
Brasstown Bald (5000ft highest point in state) on Holiday for the race,
but also ALL summer long. The race is meant to be a TV commercial for
the state. The AP wire, USA Today, etc coverage, is how that happens
nationaly.
Get a clue people. They don't need Subway there to be big.

If the UCI was serious about worldwide expansion, and full year
calender, they would make TdG and SFGP ProTour events for 2006, and do
so quickly.
I meant no/no
I see your point... and am wondering how I have gotten sucked into
posting this much in one day.
Still, I don't think any sponsors would leave as long as Lance is
there.
How will you feel if next year they say your team is out of Philly and
San Fran b.c. they need to make room for Gerolsuckas, Aqua e Drogas,
and other crucial teams that all the American fans are longing for...

I bet I win, or at least drop out after you.

You would have already lost the bet. 9 times.
You would have already lost the bet. 9 times.
Two responses:
1) I guess that is why you are PRO and I am a chump amateur.
or
2) I can't come up 9 X that I have done a race big enough that they
actually had to shut down an entire major city.
Keep 'em coming. I am getting into this. May have to come up with an
pseudonym soon.
That's just the thing though, Lance isn't always going to be there.
Need another name to latch onto. And hence we have Bobby, Levi, and
others coming to town.
This is weird. CritPro making sense, and speaking in sensible terms
and actual discussion. This is nice.

These guys ain't much younger than Lance and ain't gonna draw his
crowd/sponsorship without some miraculous comeback... and by that I
don't mean having to fund your own racing for a year...
