Does regular diet soda - diet pepsi etc - screw up the Atkins way of eating?
I lost 35 pounds two years ago, kept it off with no difficulty till this winter, and now I"ve put five back on despite being increasingly careful about the little carb additions I'd been making in the last several months. I have, however, increased my consumption of diet sodas. Is that the culprit?
It's more likely that your calories have increased or your activity decreased. Some people claim that various artificial sweeteners cause a variety of problems for them. This may be true but most people do not do a scientific experiment to determine whether that is actually the cause. To do so you must quit the suspected product, see an improvement, start the product again, see bad results, quit again, see improvement, all the while making sure that you keep everything else constant.

If you want a good answer, stop the use of diet soda for a few weeks but keep eating the same.
Personally, I found that I drank excessive amounts of that diet soda when I started Low Carb...... and it was just wise to get rid of that junk food part of my life.
I have no idea what effect it may have had on weight.... it was just additional habit forming junk food, and more expensive than plain water.

I'm guilty of drinking at least 1.5 liters of diet sodas every day (I know it i bad for me) and I lost over 40 lb very quickly eight months ago so I don't think this is your problem. Jerry

====================== I doubt it. I lost the initial 46 lbs low-carbing *and* drinking diet Pepsi the whole time. Maybe not every day but at least several times a week.

I was an inveterate diet soda drinker before starting low carb. When I did, I cut out the diet soda and went to plain water for the first three months. As I was doing so well I started re-introducing things to my diet - the first was diet soda. I'm now back to my usual couple of quarts a day, hasn't made a damned bit of difference to my loss rate, which is 2.5 - 3 lb/week.
I'm sure it's still leaching minerals out of my system, inducing dehydration, and all of the other nasty things people attribute to it. If that's the most unhealthy habit I have, I figure I'm still doing better than most.

I can see that other people don't think diet sodas is a problem, but I've suspected it too. The first time I started doing Atkins diet I didn't drink any sodas the first 2 weeks and I lost about 13 pounds. Then I started drinking diet sodas (more than 1 liter a day), and my weight loss stopped. Maybe it's different from person to person and maybe the quantity is also important? And actually it wasn't diet Pepsi, it was Pepsi Max (don't know if it's only here they call it that) which uses another artificial sweetener than diet Pepsi, so maybe the type of sweetener has something to do?
Losing during the first two weeks and then ceasing to lose in the third week is how Atkins works whether or not you drink diet pop.

Is 188 your goal weight or your current weight? you seems to have got it the wrong way round????
Low carb books I have read suggest that it is the citric acid in some diet sodas that can interfere with ketosis/weight loss.

Pepsi Max has lots of caffine btw...
Then it might be 215/214/188. My goal weight is 188, and my current weight is 214.
Thank you all for your responses. I was hoping for a magic bullet, of course, and have stopped drinking the junk for the time being - we'll see what happens.

All diet soda is not the same. Various brands use different sweetners. Dr. Atkins thought that from his clinical experience, aspartame appeared to inhibit weight loss in some people. He recommended choosing other sweetners when possible. Personally, I've used aspartame as well as the others with no problems. Most people on here have reported no problems either. I suggest switching to a diet drink with splenda, at least for awhile, and see what happens.

Then it might be 215/214/188. My goal weight is 188, and my current weight is 214.
And how does caffeine affect the metabolism?
I drink coffee myself so I'm no one to speak. However I saw it somewhere that caffine affects the blood sugar level, so if you drink caffinated drinks, your glucose level in your blood will still goes up and down despite you cut out the carb from your diet. As you know, a roller coaster style blood glucose level will contribute to increased appetite and make you more likely to quit low carb or eat too much.
