Yes, that's what I heard too. While I think it's necessary to have a
plan, I guess I think a team should not be too rigid about "the script"
and instead read the race as it actually unfolds. IOW, have a plan B,
script B, or whatever.

have said that the radios kill many rider's spontaneity tactics-wise.

For the coverage I saw of the front of the peloton, Boontown and
Pet-Pet would *always* be in camera view. I can't say the same of

there are plans that can help a guy win a race like Flanders if he
doesn't have the legs. This year especially, there was no answer when
someone pulls away like Tom did.

With explanations like that The Plan is elevated to the utter silliness of

Last year Wesemann won with a 'Plan' involving to sit back until the Muur.
That's a plan but it's mainly a gamble. It's the plan of one who knows he
only has a chance when the stronger ones waste energy in vain. That can be
the 'plan' for a certain rider, not for a team which is -rightly- considered
to have about a handful potential contenders.

Oh yeah, here's another lesson from watching these races for 25 years: a gap
of 15-20 seconds to a not-smoothly cooperating leadgroup is often quickly
bridged by a real contender.
But that command apparently didn't come through The Radio, that other
failing asset.

I read the 'as big' not in the sense you meant it, and I seldom care for
links.

Interesting that you mention being juiced or not. I had the impression from
watching the little bit of it that was on OLN that the racing Sunday was
more like before 1990. More suffering, more splits of the top riders when
the bergs came, a more believable solo win than when Tafi simply rode away
as he did. Perhaps this has something to do with the tests for homologous
doping and the test for autologus blood boosting that Verbruggen told the
press was being used but has not yet be given final test status. The
increased out of competition testing may also be keeping riders clean or
cleaner--meaning they may have to be more selective in the races they target
for juicing. This could be one of the most interesting seasons in years in
a sporting sense.

The new course brings the bergen (proper plural) more compactly than ever.
Still a lot of jojo, but to less avail for the dropped than usual.
And it seems the pace was also higher than usual in the flat opening (there
was some quality in that break)

Tafi 'simply' rode away on tactics (Nardello) and Flemish rivalry (Museeuw-
Van Petegem), and "where am I?" (George), after having barely survived the
hills.
You seem to imply he rode away because he was (better) juiced and thus
superior.
