This isn't a "that was a really good workout, my muscles are aching"
sort of pain, its a "feels like I've got an injury" sort of pain.
Then your subject is misleading. This isn't "soreness in shoulders,"
but pain.

I think I'll see my doctor about it but is this sort of thing common?
Dunno.

of thing usually need physiotherapy?
Dunno. But it might be resolvable simply with the appropriate
flexibility exercises. My wife swears by "Stretch & Strengthen," by
Judy Alter. I haven't begun any of the exercises in the book,
myself, but if the Forward and Introduction are to be believed, the
exercises therein can resolve just about *any* muscle or joint
"issue."
I do know this: When I tweaked my upper back, a number of years ago,
doing a stupid, stupid thing, my doctor, based upon a specialist's
exam, figured I was in for an extended recovery period. (My mobility
was seriously impaired and my right hand all but non-functional.) My
wife gave me a homeopathic remedy, performed shiatsu (oriental
pressure/massage therapy) and had me do three or four of the
exercises in that book. One week later I had nearly 100% mobility
back and 75% of my right hand. My doctor, an osteopath and teacher
in chiropractic medicine, was quite honestly shocked.
