Hey Chaps, I'm back

fcuking computers.

Router and PC mysteriously and simultaneously died a few days back. As
the PC demise was less than absolute it's been a real pain identifying
the problems. Anyway, I am sitting with a new laptop[1] and (wow)
wireless network. Will be back to talk bikes once I've reinstalled
everything and worked out ow to transfer my data from a partially
functional ex PC.

[1] Paid for out of the savings of not running a car. Actually, that
excuse is wearing a bit thin; my wife recently asked "just what make of
car is it that you don't have - it must be an expensive model?"

I hope you are using WPA...

WEP plus restricting the MAC addresses does pretty well. Its always
easy to set thing up to make it easy and there are lots of systems set
up to be easy. That doesn't mean it has to be.

Haven't secured the connection yet - I'll be looking at that today. In
the meantime I'm relying on the physical security layer; assuming a 100m
effective range means that any cracker would have to be sitting in my
garden.

Or further away if they have access to a Pringles tube.

Don't believe the hype. Pringles cans aren't all that good but you
can build a pretty good antenna for less than a fiver. Of course,
some of us are a little more obsessed 😉

Though disasters aplenty have nigh on reduced shoreham to a war zone. How
anyone manages to navigate a bike made out of tissue paper, costing less
than the takeaway hanging from the handlebars up and down the 6ft deep
potholes whilst avoiding the man eating buzzards and trimming the hedgerows
with a pair of seccateurs, and not spilling a drop from teh bucket of live
lobsters in the rear pannier, I do not know..

Have to be a bloody effective Pringles tube if it meant they could do
it without sitting in either my garde or the fields next to it.

Two kilometres, allegedly, with a Pringles tube. More than that, with a
specialist sniper antenna.
