Don't be fooled by the hype machine. you'd get better stopping power by
replacing the pads on the LX brakes with Kool-Stop salmon pads. XTR doesn't
necisarily have more braking power, just lighter weight.

Make sure to get the machined type made from stainless steel. Make sure it
is coated with some sort of super slippy substance like black teflon. Then
make sure all your housings are ultra clean - use a squirt bottle and shoot
alchohol thru them, followed by a blast from an air gun. Then make sure
your ferrules have the little rubber donuts to keep spooge out of the
housings (which should be teflon or gortex lined.)

Then again you could use just about anything and swap them out often and
have pretty good performance.

The donuts do nothing to keep stuff out of the housing. They only serve to
prevent cable slap on the frame.

Definitely the way to go. With the "sealed" systems, a bit of grit always
gets in, and you have crappy performance for a long time thereafter. Cables
and housing are meant to be disposable/replaceable components of a bike. At
<$20 a set for all cables and housing, the performance difference is well
worth the cost.
