I've got a question. What do you call the lycra cycling shorts that cover just over the knee? I can't seem to find anything like that, and I don't want full-length cycling tights. I already have a pair of cycling shorts that end above the knee, but call me a wuss, I've got a phobia of skinning my knees (I had a not so pleasant experience as a kid once... Scarred for life). I don't want anything that'll necessarily hold in a lot of heat, as I want to be able to wear this year round.

But unfortunately neither knickers, nor knee warmers save you from skinned knees. When you fall lycra rips off and you have an “asphalt syndrome”
Although it might prevent from blood running to toward ankle.
And neither knee warmers nor knickers are going to prevent skinned knees on a crash.
True true. And you'd be less aero riding around in knee pads. (That's a joke, really you'd look silly doing this...but hey if you have a phobia and this keeps you on the bike, well, more power to ya. There are some pretty sporty-looking ones the rollerbladers wear.)

Knee warmers. All the big clothing manufacturers make them. They'll provide no protection in a crash, neither will your shorts.

Hey. Thanks all for the very quick response. It's disheartening to hear that these sorts of things provide no protection in crash. :-(. I'm fortunate enough to have never taken a spill, but my commute's been really short (1 mile to campus. Less than that, actually...) But now, I got a job. 13 miles one way, so... We'll see. I think I'll just have to work getting over my phobia. Or wear something thicker - like denim jeans. That'll be comfortable... 😄
Wear that road rash like a badge of honour.....happens to all of us! 😄
Yah... I imagine it's not as bad as I think it'll be. Once I've had my "christening," I'm I won't be so uptight about it. Kinda like riding in traffic - right? Scary at first, but definitely not bad - once you get your panties out of a knot. But still, as prestigious as that badge is, I'm not gonna go looking to get one anytime soon. 😉

My experience is that one's butt or hip is more likely to suffer the wrath of the asphault than one's knee. That might give you some comfort. 😉
