there is a thing called a trail-gator which basically locks the steering on
the front wheel and lifts it off the ground so the bike can be operated like
a tag-along. I don't think it is as user freindly or light as a real
tag-a-long but has the advantage of enabling the child's bike to be ridden
independently; this would be ideal in somewhere like the New Forest where
you could take them for a longer assisted ride which may involve some
on-road and then they can ride themselves around e.g. the campsite. There is
not much price difference between one and a real tag-a-long,£50-100. NB
don't expect too much pedalling from the rear!

I used one for many years till I built the tandem.

They are good for what they are (I had a Giraff but the Trailgator is
better) though I wouldn't want to use one for long distances. I have towed
the wee ones up to 5 miles in a go. The better a child can balance, the
better the ride will be for the tower.

For some reason I thought this thread was to say that Cash Converters
can be a source of cheap bikes because they take them as security for
loans (as seen on TV)!

The Trail-gator seems to be good, but has quite a low weight limit. My
7-year-old niece is apparently already too heavy, and she's not a tub
of lard.

If your friend is anywhere near Hampshire, I have a Trail-Gator to sell.
Only used three times, so in very good condition. There was nothing
wrong with it as such: my daughter's solo riding advanced rapidly, and
we bought her a new bike with 24-inch wheels which the Trail-Gator
wouldn't fit! Having said that, it's certainly nowhere near as good for
towing as a proper trailerbike. (Oh look, I seem to have one of those
that needs selling too...)
