Galvanised bicycle frames?

  1. I've done a search on the 'net but didn't turn anything up on this topic.

    Does anyone know anything about galvanising steel bike frames to prevent
    corrosion?

    Could be a ..different look. (If not painted).

    What are people's thoughts?

    Perhaps there'd be issues with other metal components attached to the
    frame.

    But why do that to good metal?

    Perhaps you are just talking about "cold galvanising" with a paint
    brush.

    I like the idea,
    but for hot dipping, if you can find someone to do it, with so many thin
    tubes it would be hard to empty them when it come out of the bath.(think of
    all that extra weight 😉)
    also it will need to be an all tig welded frame. most solder will melt in
    the bath(about 445C). it will be things like cable stops, rack mounts,
    bottle mounts and the rear dropouts that might be soldered. Cleaning up the
    BB(and any other threads) could be a problem too.

    Electro-Galvanizing might be a much better way to go. I dont know what they
    will say about the solder(if there is any) and it will cost much more i
    believe(it has been a long time since i priced stuff like this)

    fitting things like seat post and the head set could be a little tricky but
    doable.
    ring some electroplaters and get some prices
    as always i could be wrong, hope i havent talked you out of it

    what about chroming? is there also a heat issue too?
    or can that be done by electroplating too ?

    I imagine that hot dipped galvanising might cause brazed fittings to
    weaken. High quality steels tend to have less of a problem with rusting
    anyway, it tends to be more cosmetic than structural. And in any case,
    most people would still like to paint the frame to make it look nice.

    chrome is electroplated. (there would be a heat issue with hot dipping
    chrome, it melts at 1907C, steel melts around 1370C, see the problem 🙂 )
    the killer with chrome is the prep, as i understand it, unlike paint chrome
    doesn't cover dints and scratches. So the prep has to be spot on. if you
    want a mirror finish you have to start with a mirror. it would also cost
    alot more. (its first copper plated i believe, i wonder what that would look
    like and how well it would last??)

  7. Satin chrome looks good without too much surface preparation needed. I have
    a couple of 531 forks that I took unpainted to a local plater for satin
    chroming to approximately match the brushed titanium frames on which they
    were going. Several unobservant people have looked at the frame and the
    forks and asked me if they are ti forks - at that point I point out the 531
    stickers on the fork blades...
