Yes ... despite being in the middle of nowhere and not having even food shops in main towns they
know what a recumbent looks like in the uists.

My favourite is Mull. Skye has some rather too busy roads. Islay moderately flat but no extra
islands to go to. Outer hebrides a bit too out of the way, and I found Lewis a bit grim in parts.

I'd only go to scotland in spring and early summer. Less midges, more light. A bloke on the Eigg
ferry told me it was often very rough in "late season" - I'd worry about weather for both ferries
and camping. This is from about the third week of August onwards - I have certainly been in near
empty campsites in late August.

As for where to leave your car, there are good places within a couple of miles of Ardrossan (hop
over Aran) or Oban.

I was in Scotland in late September early October and had almost no midges, last year. Spent a day
on Harris and a day on the Uists. Harris lovely. Uists a bit grubby. People lovely. There is a VERY
strong southerly prevailing wind there. I second the bit about Mull. It's fabulous. Skye is a bit
busy but Elgol is wonderful. The Kintyre peninsula is well worth doing.

The family are heading there later on this month for a couple of weeks. We are in a cottage but will
be taking the bikes.

An evening spent with the CalMac timetables and brochures and maps can come up with lots of
nice tours.

I have a plan to do Ardrossan - Arran - Lochranza - Kintyre - Kennacraig - Islay - Colonsay - Oban -
back to Glasgow by train. (but there are lots of variations even in that trip eg. you could come
back down to East Loch Tarbert from Oban and then cross to Cowal and back to the mainland via Bute
and Rothesay. Or head further out from Oban.)
