Indicators for bicycles

I saw some when working in a shop.
A customer brought in a bike once- a real clunking commuter, with a milk
crate on the rack. Stuck to the back of the crate were two red LED
blinkies, with the OFF/BLINK switches replaced with pushbuttons wired to
the handlebars. I think there were even arrow outlines painted onto the
lights. She said her son had done the wiring, which shouldn't be too
hard for anyone who can solder neatly, it would be no more difficult
than installing a cyclo computer.

"Work" how? I don't doubt they blink and flask as they're supposed to,
but whether they signal your intent is another question. The blinking
and flashing lights are very close to the centerline and thus may not
make your intentions clear. I'd think that reflective gloves and
emphatic hand signals are a better solution:

Thanks for that. Yes I mean flashing turn indicators. I doubt that the
style shown would be highly visible, and only seems to show to the rear. I
thought that with electronic advancement there might be something available
that would strap on upper arms, or elsewhere that would show to front and
rear, a bright LED bulb, and have a remote (wireless) switch on handle bars.
Inventors - please get cracking on this, and send me the design royalties!

There have been such gadgets made and marketed. The reason you don't
see them on every bike shop's display wall is that they have very few
buyers.

You are, of course, free to brew up your own version and try to market
it to recover the cost of development, but I would not advise going
into debt to sdo so.

Let the cars carry the power supply -- good reflective material
will be much more visible in headlights than an LED.

Sure - but it would be nice to have some device that would allow hands to
remain on the handlebars.

I found a set in a discount bin for $5. Not only turn indicators, but
also brake lights, complete with switch that mounted to brake cable. I
was going to put it on my bike as a gag for group night rides, but
never got around to it. Seriously, hand signals work fine. If you think
your hands aren't visible enough, put reflective bands around your
wrists.

A smoke marker tossed to the side toward which you're going to turn is
far more effective at clearing traffic from the path, but they're
inconvenient to deploy.

In daylight, the arm signal is much more likely to get attention in my
opinion. At night, I question whether any form of lighted signal has
a good enough chance of being correctly interpreted in time to make a
difference...and whether it will actually make a difference if it is
correctly interpreted.

I first saw them on a fluffed-up commuter-bike ridden by a neighbour
when I was a youngster, over 50 years ago, and they worked fine. They're

still do for some markets. Their usefulness is limited by the
narrowness of a bicycle. You could have them out on stalks, but then
they'd get damaged and add to wind drag.

brake light (it senses movement of your rear brake cable), and turn

the idea of a brake light sounds attractive, especially when I'm
