  1. We've been looking at CD mapping systems and I've just downloaded the
    tracklogs demo.

I think it may be love at first sight!

    Three questions:

When we go on the tracklogs web site and look for walking routes there
don't appear to be any, there just seem to be cycle routes. Is this
right or am I doing something silly?

Can we get example walking routes from any other web sites?

Having vowed that we were sticking to map and compass, the idea of a
GPS in conjuction with Tracklogs (and the map and compass!) seems to be
more attractive - can anyone make any recommendations?

You're right, threre are no walking routes available on there!!
When you mention downloadable walks i assume you mean the files including
    mapping?

If not, then I have some Snowdonia based files on my website (see
signature). These are mainly trackpints, but i am now putting gps logs on
    there (again in Tracklogs format).

As far as choosing tracklogs for digital mapping, it is certainly an
excellent program that is often overlooked for the more popular memory map.
Personally, after lengthy use of both, i prefer Tracklogs as routes are
easier to set up and they are easier to manage once set up.

IMHO, Anquet beats them both in this respect.

The two market leaders appear to be Memory Map and Anquet, and you can
    get trial versions of both.

I use Tracklogs, but the down side is that in the current version its
handling of the GPS tracklog (ie record of where you have been) is poor,
as it doesn't download the timestamps or altitude at each point.

And for waypoints it doesn't download the Garmin 60C 'comment' field
either, which is a bummer .. hopefully it will be fixed in some future
release. However for entering and editing routes it is really
easy-peasy, and the wide availability of 1:25k maps is nice too.

Need to correct myself. There is the option to download altitude data,
    but still not the timestamp.

I tried setting "Download GPS Height Data", but it seems to double the
    total ascent figure!

If you disable that, it applies altitude data based on its own mapping
    data, which I find satisfactory.

  8. Hi Dave

We have done a trial download of one of the logs - minor issue that we
don't yet have the map to match yet :-)

I liked your site, but find it quite difficult to read - don't know
whether its the settings on our PC but it comes out as black writing on
    a blue background.

    Have you seen this site?

Strange, I've just tried it, and it didn't do that. I did notice thought
that the time it showed (which is based on Naismith's algorithm and is
not you actual time) assumed the ascent was zero. (I didn't have the
"Translate GPS heights into OS heights" option ticked).

I find that as long as I've got a good fix, the GPS altitude height is
pretty accurate, and sometimes better than the inbuilt altitude data.

Hmm, yes it is Black on a blue background, it's readable on my machine, but
i've a shiny LCD monitor, and as i've written it i'm not going to find it
    difficult to read!
If people get difficulty with the colour i might look at lightening the
background colour, but thanks for the feedback, a webpage has to be easy to
    read above all else.
Possibly you might need to change your font size in your browser, the site
is designed to be used from small resolutions up to high, so all the text on
    there is scalable.

Maybe I'll try that again, but the total ascent was way out, and I think
I tried the "Translate GPS Heights" in both ticked and unticked.

    Good!
It's also a good way for me to distinguish between my old site (still there
