Rode from home yesterday thinking that I would be riding 8th street (dirt road up into the Boise hills) due to the showers from previous days, but as usual soil conditions in one part of town do not reflect conditions in the hills. When I got to trails behind Camelsback I was pleasantly surprised by how dry they were. I of course encountered mud puddles on all the trails, but very few covered the trails so no problems. There were many riders out today, probably like me wanting to get a ride in before the heavier storms hit today. While riding from home the skies threatened to rain on me, but soon after starting up Chickadee, the clouds had moved on and the day turned quite nice. Today's ride took me up Chickadee Ridge and on over to Hulls Gulch. Indeed as GMan pointed out in an earlier post the stream is looking mighty nice right now. I had 5 riders come blasting down at various spots on my way up, one of whom was wearing a ski mask with only his eyes showing. He must have been roasting in that. Since there are no convince stores up here and probably not too many folks carry much cash, I am not sure what to make of that. Also, I did not pass anyone running down the trail looking for their bike. Once to the top of Hulls I crossed the stream onto the Freeway and headed over to trail #4. I planned to ride up #4 to the top of Sidewinder. The rain made #4 a little interesting, first it packed the loose dirt & sand to give real good traction, second it felt like in some areas that it had a breakable crust so that I would start to spin out on some of the steeper sections. Kind of a strange trail condition. Anyway, made it up to Sidewinder without too much trouble and proceeded to head on down. No loose sand! This trail was a blast with great traction all the way down to the Freeway. Took the Freeway down to Red Cliffs and back to the lower section of Hulls Gulch. Since I still had some time left to ride I headed on over to Uncle Stans and on up to the Military Connector. Again the rain had did wonders to firming up the loose sand on the Connector so the bike just railed down to the Military Reserve. I hopped on to Mountain Cove road and headup to the new trail (can't remember the name) that is just above the shooting range and connects with Shanes. A great little trail that snakes it way around the hillside with not much elevation gain. This area is going to awesome when the spring flowers come out. I get back on Upper Central Ridge trail and make my way down the ridge to a trail that parallels Central ridge but slightly below it (I need to buy a trail map) and then head back up Military Connector to Uncle Stans and then Owls Roost before getting back on pavement for the ride home. What a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Doesn't anyone practice proper trail etiquette anymore? You should have said something like, "thanks for yielding to my huffing and puffing up this hill, asshat".

You must be pretty fast to cover that much territory in what appears to be an after-work type ride. Jimminy. Surprised you could ride up 4 to Sidewinder, considering its north facing and I've heard pretty squirrely right now. I've ridden up that once, and didn't like it. I don't even like going down it. I'll usually run Sidewinder as an out-n-back, as I love the s turns and water bars on the way down.
I just plug away when I am by myself. I have seen most of the views so unless something catches my eye, I just keep the cranks turning and enjoy the feel of the trail under my wheels. Mike

Not too many proper etiquette's out there. I ride with a few and I'm always [censored] about their lack of proper trail manners. /rant on/ And I keep rebuilding one part of Trail 100 here in Phoenix that requires carrying 6-8 large rocks up the hill to block off the easy way over this little climb as some jackass evidently can't clear the slight off-camber rock peak. [censored], one time I fixed the trail on an out-n-back and the jackass had already come by and spent the time throwing the rocks I'd put in, back down the hill before I had returned. I fix the damn trail at least once a week. I'd like to catch the dumbass just once. If he spent as much time practicing the little climb as he does throwing the rocks back down the hill, he'd know how to ride it..... I'm assuming it's a biker as it just doesn't make sense for a hiker or horseback rider to do this as it just doesn't affect them. /rant off/

You need to dig them in and half-bury them. That and move more rocks into it everytime you have to rebuild. Try transplanting some cactus into the cheater line too. Also, [censored] on the rocks after you move them. At least the fool will get a handful of your [censored] the next time they decide to move them.

Plus, you know, they'll be your territory until the next person pisses on them. You could also set them on top of a landmine. That'll learn 'em!

ROTFLMAO
Should [censored] on them too! Shovel is a good idea though I've never ridden with one. Problem with digging is it's fairly rocky anyway, just a lot easier line. I'm going to talk to the park ranger that controls that area and see if we can't get a group there to fix the "bi-pass"

Devil's Advocate question:
Why not maintain the bypass too?
Punks don't deserve to be rewarded because it'll only encourage them to make even more bypasses. They need to learn how to ride, or take up coasting through indoor "mtb parks".

Along with what JD posted, if the bypass is maintained the correct line will never be used. I'll take photos to show the damage already done by bypassing the rocks and cutting through the looser dirt area. There are several lower trails these idiots can take that aren't as technical. It just doesn't make sense that they keep moving the rocks when there is already an easier path to take.
