Average race speeds.

In perth:
A Grade Crits - 42-44kph
B Grade Crits - 36-38kph

In perth:
A Grade Crits - 42-44kph

About the same in the vets racing. Except for the last lap of my race
on Sunday. Four of us had lapped the entire field and we played cat and
mouse for 3/4 of the last lap. It felt more like a track sprint race
without the high banking to swoop down off... Average speed for the
last lap: <30km/h!

Just to elaborate a bit further, usually there is only two or three of us in Agrade so four was a welcome change and usually we average about 36.5 kph depending on who rides, upto 38 kph.😎

Just to elaborate a bit further, usually there is only two or three of
us in Agrade so four was a welcome change and usually we average about

20-50 riders in C-Grade, Glenvale Cres., Melbourne: ~40kph for the hour
on a relatively flat course.

In B grade at Glenvale, a 42-43km/h average isn't uncommon, but that's
with a big field of around 30 or so, and they're only an hour long.
When there's been 80(!) in the bunch, spot speeds have been over
55km/h, and averages around 45 or so.

Last year's Lenny Hammond h'cap (100km) we set an average speed over
the 100km of 40.99km/h (C grade bunch). Dead flat parcourse, around 18
in the C grade bunch to start with. Bear in mind that a h'cap is not
like a crit, but A grade averaging 37km/h? I guess with 2 or 3 riders,
but with a field that small, isn't it better racing to slot into a
lower grade?

In B grade there is usually only four or five riders, and i can lap them on my own so it isn't quite as much fun. We are only a small country club with about ten regular riders to both handicap races and crits. I just wanted to see how far of city racers we are. At least with 20 + riders you get more of a rest. We ride 45 minute crits, if you are feeling strong you spend most of that time on the front.😄

I go up a grade or two when I go back to Mildura. Having the rider
numbers in the city is a definate advantage.

It's not just averages that go up as you move to higher grades, the variability also increases. A good example is the Heffron Park races - B grade seems to fluctuate between 32-35km/h laps and around 50, depending on who's trying to form and chase breaks. Not nice if you're an ok TT'ist...

OK, if you guys can do speeds >40kph in flat road racing, I challenge you to come over to Tassie for the Anzac day long weekend to ride in Harvest Cycle. It's a stage race for vets. See www.harvestcycle.com.au It's going to be a blast and hopefully, bigger than Ben Hur. A highlight will be a Crit around the streets of historic Richmond, with the streets closed off especially for the race. There is a challenging Hill Climb for one of the stages. Something for everyone.
