If you're willing to go a bit out of your way to Mitcham, Cycle Science
(south side of Maroondah Highway, a little to the west of Mitcham Road)
seems to be staffed by reasonably clued and helpful people. Yes, I know
it's a couple of extra suburbs out of your way... unfortunately, I don't
know of anybody between Blackburn and the CBD offhand.

CW are OK but can be susceptible to being understaffed. Work is good but need time to do things (outrageous!) tend to run a bit lean and I have always insisted on them taking my bike/s for a ride afterwards as I hate it when you get your bike back and something is obviously still not right when you get it back. good followup service tho.
If your running campy the guys at SC in Mitcham will mor ethan likely send you to Doug at CW anyway...

I've been a very happy customer of Cycle Science at Mitcham.

Just on this topic of LBS, I recently had some work done on my roadie
by a store in the Sth Melb area, and when I got it back there was dirty
grease hand marks all over the bar tape. Am I clean freak, or do you
expect to get you bike back free of grease marks?

Are you a clean freak? yes
Do I expect to get my bike back free of grease marks? yes
If it bothers you, ask them to replace the tape. Get black so you can't
see the grease next time.

man that sucks..... Id be whinging all the way until the time they changed the tape....
are the initials of the bike shop, B N, they are my LBS and my bike always comes back cleaner and very well serviced.
now if it is the other shop on canterbury road, I had 1 experience with them and that was enough for me to never go back again!

I took my MTB in there yesterday to get a front derailler replaced, seems they have hired a couple of new mechanics recently, but if you can manage to get Brendan to do the work you should be more than happy.

it is a strange location, but they supply a lot of bikes/servicing to Victoria Police so its probably a good location for them.

IMO, you should tell them. If you give them some feedback, rather
that just disappear, then maybe they'll lift their game, which gives
them a better chance to survive. Yo don't have to use them
again, but if you tell them why you'rue not coming back they
can improve. If you're anxious about confrontation, write
them a letter. LBS's are far better than
the big chains, and if we as bike consumers don't help the LBS's
as much as we can, then we go down the path of chain stores and
franchises. No thanks.

Fair point. I don't work like that though. If it isn't an issue for
them to dirty up my bike then I don't agree with it. It's a bit like
people, you can [censored] and wine about wanting them to change, but if
that's their personality, then you can't change it. You either put up
and except them, or move on. I've chosen to move on.
I do most of my own repairs/maintenance myself. I will only use a LBS
if the tool that is required is too expensive to buy, or I'm looking
for specialist knowledge that I don't have. It was the latter with
them, and they didn't fix the problem anyway and said nothing about it
either. So the whole experience wasn't a good one for me.

totally agree. I work in Design/multimedia running my own biz and the biggest problem ("there are no problems, only stoopid clients 🙄 ) is trying read people's minds about what they want. The second hardest is trying to solve a client's problems if you missed the mark the first time. Mainly they clam up or say inane [censored] like "Oh, I showed my wife/partner/bank manager over the weekend and he/she/it doesnt like purple!".
Whilst I may pretend towards some vagueries of bein an 'artist' Im a commercial one. capital C, small a. I dont get it right, I dont get to eat (or buy more bikep0rn :eek: ).
You gotta learn to take criticism as an opportunity to improve and look at it as a 2nd chance. not sure how many LBSs would subscribe to this theory ut heck, its worth a go. written probably is better and would strike more of a chord. not gettin stuck into 'the scruffy kid sold me an irrelevant widget for my needs' but perhaps the differences between your expectations and your final result.
