I followed the off-road (off pavement, really) alternatives to the northern
half of the route in April 2000. I remember thinking that a touring bike
with reasonably fat tires would have worked at least as well as my MTB, and
the off road route took me through some really remote, beautiful country.

All those already mentioned, plus don't forget Pistyll Rhaeadr (the
highest waterfall in Wales). It is (or was a few years ago) completely
unspoilt, nothing up there except a small campsite and very small cafe. And
it's free. It's up a hill in the village of Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant.
This is also the place where 'The Englishman who went up a hill and came
down a mountain' was filmed.
