  1. I am interested to hear you opinion after you get used to it.

I received it for my birthday 2 days ago. Tried it yesterday. It seems
to work fine, although I have yet to figure out more controls. One
thing that I do not know yet how to do is, how to return to my last
lap and see my pace. More details to follow.

  2. I don't have a 101 but I'm pretty sure that once the unit is running, if
you pop the on/off button quickly it will turn on the back light. If you
have set it up to record a lap every mile (or whatever distance you
prefer) it will automatically come on, as it will for other messages.

I've never had you other problem, but you do need to set the settings
for you to get the best results. If your unit didn't come with a manual
you can download a copy of it (pdf) from Garmin's site.

I am rather disappointed, so far.

First of all, as far as I could tell, there is no button to light the
display. I run in the evenings and it is dark when I run. So I have to
wait until the next streetlight to see the screen, and the lights are very
    sparsely placed.

Second, I ran in one direction, then back, and it looks like this
forerunner subtracted one run from another. So, it told me that I ran
something like 0.2 miles in my last run.

I will continue exploring it and it is possible that I will change my
opinion once I learn more about it.

  3. The manual is available here.

And this is the general Garmin Forerunner 101 site.

The manual does say the POWER button is the BACKLIGHT as well.
