I have a 2004.5 Giant Iguana and I am looking to buy a new mountain bike. I will spend around 1000$ or less. I was wondering if anyone has opinions on wich bikes would fall into this category and be a significantly better bike than mine. Even though mine retails for 600$ I have seen better components on bikes that are around 800-1000$. Opinions?????

There are some pretty good Norco's for $800-1000. Check out the adventure series.

I ordered a Gary Fisher Tasajara disc Hardtail a few days ago, they are nice bikes and they retail for about $900.00. I am also impressed with the Hydraulic Disc Brakes that come on the Tasajara Disc.

The Iguana is a solid bike. Not a GREAT bike, but a solid one. What this means is that you'd have to spend a mint o' money before seeing a performane increase that will justify the price.
I wouldn't upgrade to better hardtail. Nor would I want a cheap FS ride. Just upgrade your fork and components as you find em on sale (take your time and really, really look. There's GREAT deals out there)
All depending on what kind of riding you do. And how much you beat up your equipment.

I 2nd the upgrade route. You're only making a marginal jump so although most components will be better, they won't be that much better. Pick your upgrades based on what's not meeting your current needs (i.e. maybe you now want disk brakes, a better fork, or a suspension seatpost (thudbuster)).
Or...save your $ and buy a much better bike in the future where everything will be a big upgrade.

$1000 will buy some badass upgrades. It can also by bib-shorts, camelbacks, cycle computers, etc... -
if i had 1000 bucks i would rebuild my whole bike strip its frame and get all new componets and new fork, wheels, ect. thats my recmendation
