Bad news: Lamson Designs went out of business.

Good News: Don Lamson is now back in the shoe business, designing and building custom cycling/golf/casual wear shoes in Eagle, Colorado (just west of Vail) for a company called "D-Squared Custom Footwear."

His new shoes are really nice -- if you liked his old ones, you'll be very impressed at the improvements. The D-Squared operation is really impressive too! It's definitely worth a drive to check out his shop and get a custom fitting when skiing Vail! (The trip to Vail, however, isn't necessary!).

The shoes don't come in white or silver. And seems really expensive.

Dammit! I went to that website and clicked on the plaster feet at the very bottom lower left and it crashed my browser! Hey folks, don't do it unless you want to restart.

Thanks very, very, much for the info. I'm ordering a new bike this week. After that I'm going to save for a pair of these shoes, they look like just what I need. My left foot is a 14D and my right is a 13EEEE, weird huh. Even the Sidi megas don't quite cut it, although they work.

Well thanks, never heard of Rocket 7's. It's nice to have choices and they're closer to where I live, about a 7 hour drive.

Yeah, that sounds good. I wouldn't shell out $300 for a pair of Sidis. They aren't even custom, but I suppose if my feet really hurt and needed custom then I d prolly go for the custom over Sidi. Something's got to be done about that plaster feet crashing my browser though 😄

That is bizarre, I read your post so I tried clicking on the plaster feet and it didn't crash my browser. So.....I dunno, computers can be a pain sometimes.

I've been using Don's shoes for years. My last pair just finally and reluctantly got retired after about 6 solid years of use.
I've also at differnt times tried the Carnac's (the old Lemonds) and I also own a pair Sidi Mega MTB shoes. They simply don't compare in terms of fit to the Lamson's.

I can't wait to get my new D2 shoes. Given the cost of high-end shoes these days, the D2s are a bargain!

How do they compare to the Rocket 7's? Are there any significant differences?

I've never seen the Rocket7s in person. One thing I noted from the website is that the sole is supposedly molded to your foot (much like a speedskate). I don't know if that is a great idea! it would seem that once molded, there isn't much room to make micro-adjustments. While the D2 shoes may, if necessary, be made from a custom last, the footbed at least can be removed and tweaked if necessary. That being said, you should probably direct your questions to Don Lamson, or to the folks at Rocket 7.

I think the Rocket7 has both a custom sole and a custom footbed. And seems like a custom sole is better than a generic size whatever sole. At least according to Rocket, it says,"super-custom sole is hand-made directly around a mold of the rider's foot to match width, length, arch, and heel cup. " It seems like it'd be better to have the sole match your measurements too instead of a size 10 sole or something. I could be wrong though. It might be better to have the exact same size 10 sole as all the other size 10 wearers.

For Rocket7s you get a plaster sock that you mold over your foot. Send that in and they make a 'last' of your foot. The carbon fiber sole is molded directly on this. The shoe is like a big orthotic on the bottom with leather/shoe on top. Very light and forms directly to your foot and only your foot.

Both are good for hard to fit feet and feet of different sizes. I have issues with big left toe that angles funny. Both of these shoes have worked. Still cheaper then a pair of high end wheels!!!
