  1. so I'm probably the millionth idiot to do this, but I drove into a parking garage with the bike on the roof. after a horrific crunch and the biblical rain of drywall plaster onto my windshield, I got out and saw my frame bent down into a disfigured genuflecting beast. miraculously, however, everything else (save the handlebars) seems to be just fine. The rear wheel survived fine, and I have all the components obviously.

so this isn't a real fancy bike, but nice for me. A specialized allez comp with a full ultegra component set. i'm new to the bike purchasing thing, so what's the best way for me to try to find a replacement frame/fork/handlebar setup and get someone to rebuild me a bike?

    So angry at myself...

  2. I would try ebay.

    Ebay?..............

  4. Check some of the online retailers, Colorado Cyclist has some nice house brands under the Douglas label. But if you're not comfortable building it up yourself, your best best would be a bike shop.

  5. Just between you and me, years ago I did it twice in the same year.

The wrenches that I took the bike to for fork repair had done it an average of one or two times each.

    IOW: it happens.

  6. Depending on where you life, you might try Craigslist for a local listing of someone selling a frame your size. Your post reminds me to never consider a roof-mount for my soon-to-be-arrived bicycle. I wish you well. At least you didn't destroy a high-end frame. Take solace there.

  7. It happens a lot and very sorry to hear that. Hopefully you already had a few scratches on your frame and it wasn't new.. I too run with a roof rack which I like a lot but that is the liability. One tip I learned from a fellow cyclist which I personally use is disconnect the garage door opener feature if you have one integrated into your car and put your garage door opener ALWAYS in your cycling bag. That way you will never do it at home at least. Sounds as though it happened away from home however...little help there.
Hopefully you will transpose all your old components to a nice fresh frame that maybe you have wanted anyway. Accidents make everybody sick and happen to everybody.
    Good Luck,
    George

  8. Don't be so hard on yourself, to make mistakes is human.

  9. I wouldn't bet you're the millionth person to do this, but definitely not the first. This is why I won't buy a roof rack. To risk damaging bike + house + rack + car...I'd hose 'em all.

The bright side is you get a new frame out of it. www.gvhbikes.com is a decent source for good frame selection/inventory/prices, there are others if you do some searching.

  10. Yeah the old 'just hide the garage door opener' approach doesn't work with overhangs. Que lastima t.i.

  11. Not a big deal as accidents go. It's just a few bucks, and no one was injured. If you had destroyed the bike and yourself in a crash, that would be a lot worse.

I don't like anything about roof racks. Even if you always remember the overhead clearance, you have less gas mileage and performance, wind noise, risk of damage to the bikes and car roof. Plus, the difficulty of mounting and demounting the rack when you're done hauling the bikes.

When I bought my last car, I made sure the bike would fit inside.

  12. That is why I'm a pickup kinda guy. Good luck, still a bummer but you'll survive. You'd be surprised how easy it is to get your bike in even a small vehicle once the wheels are off.

  13. Buy a bike rack that fits on the back of the vehicle!

Lucky it wasn't a low bridge!

I think Gary died recently. If you try www.gvhbikes.com you'll get a message

Yes, most small hatchbacks or sedans with folding seats work fine. My 58cm frame fits in the back of my New Beetle with just the front wheel off.

 I know he was being treated for leukemia, that's horrible news. 🙁

  17. If it makes you feel any better, a former boss of mine lost a PAIR of Serottas (his and his wife's) when his wife (a doctor) got paged on their way home from vacation. She scraped them off pulling into the concrete parking garage at the hospital. It was carnage.

Don't forget to try Supergo and Nashbar. Sometimes they have good deals on middle-of-the-road framesets. Cannondale used to have frame blow-outs as well.

  18. just a thought...many people come into my shop each year with the same problem and many get some cash back from car insurance...one guy even got money with home owners insurance...I would give that a shot...if ya get some cash back from that, I would try a crash replacement...couple hundred bucks for a fixed (or sometimes a new) frame.....
