The World Championships are in Canada in July this year. Thorpe won't be there as he is taking a year off. I think he'll find it difficult to come back from that, but we'll see. Hackett will swim the 400, 800, and 1500.
How come the men don't compete at 800m in the Olympics? And for that matter, why don't the women swim the 1500m at the Olympics?
Maybe they don't have enough time in the schedule, but it only comes around once every four years.

PS Phelps signed endorsement deal for digital music player reportedly worth $4 million. So maybe he can put the drunk driving behind him and make a go of it on Madison Avenue.

It's a very gradual process to have further events added to the Olympic program because of the enormity of the Games as they are now. Many sports want additional events so there's a waiting list - for example in Swimming: it's the 50s for the form strokes, Open Water Swimming and dare I suggest: men synchro.?
It doesn't seem that long ago when only the 200m was contested for breaststroke.
