  1. It is interesting to see a belt drive and gearbox setup winning at the top level. BikeRumor reports that Harnden won at Les Gets on a Gamux Sego with a Pinion gearbox and Gates belt drivetrain. While results depend on many factors, seeing this hardware hold up in a downhill environment is a bit of a shift from the usual setups.

    Harnden mentioned that her upright, rearward cockpit helped reduce arm and leg fatigue. For those of us who split our time between different surfaces, the trade off between a traditional drivetrain and a gearbox usually comes down to maintenance and weight.

    What do you value most when considering a gearbox for your own riding? How do you balance cockpit position against steering precision?

  2. A gearbox winning at Les Gets is wild! For me, it all comes down to the maintenance reality. Do these gearboxes actually hold up to the kind of abuse you see in DH, or are they just cleaner until they break? If the maintenance is lower and it doesn't wreck the frame's toughness, it sounds like a win, but the price is usually the dealbreaker. Is it actually a value play or just a luxury for the pros? Also, on that cockpit, how much steering precision are you giving up for that fatigue reduction? An upright position feels great until you need to dive into a steep, technical section, right?

  3. I suspect the price makes it a luxury for most, but the real value is in the maintenance. For anyone who has spent hours cleaning a gritty drivetrain, a sealed gearbox is a huge draw. As for the cockpit, an upright position definitely feels great for fatigue, but it is a trade off. You generally lose some of that aggressive weight shift and precision needed for steep, technical sections, though it depends on how the rider compensates with their body position.

On steep, technical sections, if you can't get your center of gravity where it needs to be, you are just fighting the bike. It usually comes down to how much you can compensate with your body position to keep the front end planted.

  5. Exactly. Fighting the bike is the last thing you want when the terrain gets steep. It really comes down to whether the rider can shift their weight effectively enough to keep that front end planted, or if the upright position just makes the bike feel too light in the steering.

  6. That is the big question! If the steering feels too light because of that upright setup, does it actually matter how much you shift your weight? At some point, the geometry just fights you. Does a rearward cockpit make the front end wander more on the steep stuff, or can a skilled rider actually make it work without feeling like they are about to loop out? It sounds like a huge risk for the sake of a little less fatigue!

  7. It depends on whether the rider can actually move their center of gravity independently of the cockpit's fixed geometry. If the setup is too rearward, shifting weight might just move the pressure point without actually planting the front tire. Much like how a chamois placed too far forward fails to support the sit bones regardless of how you sit, a cockpit that fights the natural pelvic and torso alignment can make the front end wander because the rider is fighting the bike's geometry rather than working with it.
