With more than 230 riders signed up for the 2,052km journey from Talas to Cholpon Ata, it is interesting to see the variety of setups before the race begins this Saturday.

    Seeing the range from older hardtails to new full-suspension builds brings up a good conversation about priorities. In my own experience with long-distance riding and Audax, I've found that if flat bars and ergonomic grips keep your neck and back pain-free, you will ride faster and further than struggling on drops. When you are facing 35,362m of elevation gain, the ability to maintain a sustainable position is everything. I've always felt that plush tyres give all the comfort you need, and full suspension often adds unnecessary weight and maintenance for general touring.

    For a first-timer taking on this route, it's a tough balance between efficiency and survival. I wonder if the push for lightweight, high-tech rigs outweighs the value of a simple, durable setup that won't fail in the middle of nowhere.

    For those who have tackled similar terrain, do you think a first-time rider should prioritize proven durability over weight savings? Also, where do you stand on the trade-off between suspension systems and overall bike weight for a race of this distance? Finally, do you think aero bars are a necessity or a luxury for this specific route?

  2. Durability should always trump weight savings on a route like this. For a first-timer, a steel touring frame is the gold standard for global expeditions because they can be welded in virtually any roadside shop if a catastrophic failure occurs. High-tech, lightweight rigs often trade off repairability for marginal gains, which is a dangerous gamble when you are in the middle of nowhere.

    Regarding suspension, the trade-off is usually not worth it. A stout steel frame combined with high-volume tyres provides sufficient vibration dampening without the maintenance headache or the weight penalty of a full-suspension system. The priority should be on reliability and a sustainable riding position.

    While the post does not mention gearing, it is the most critical factor for 35,000m of climbing. Many riders underestimate the need for ultra-low ratios when loaded. A mountain bike triple setup with a granny gear, such as a 24x36, is a lifesaver on steep passes with heavy gear. If you cannot keep a steady cadence, you will burn out long before the finish.
