I have seen:

Eagles (Burns Bog is full of 'em)

Rabbits (ditto)

Urban Racoons

and 1 (one) Coyote

I also got a fantastic view of the Scott Paper fire on Annacis Island a few
years back.

i saw a lot of local fauna today: crackheads in pioneer square,
australopethicus trying to navigate a hummer at 9th & jefferson, and zig-zag
the kitty-cat...and there's a week-old dead pidgeon in the bike lane on

I've seen an otter just off 1st Ave, west of Main where the old
warehouses are situated on landfill in False Creek. One of those still
standing was, I figure, built on pilings so there must be some kind of
water access for an otter as I can't envision one traversing about
three hundred meters of asphalt barrens.

I often see coyotes along SW Marine on the Endowment Lands in the
pre-dawn hours. Hell, I've seen them in Shaughnessy at noon for lunch
on the rate payer's pets.

Well I don't know that we have river otters where I live, but a couple of
weeks ago I saw 2 dolphins jump clear out of the water while riding along
the beach front road here. Most of the time they are in deep water well off
shore.

A few years ago on my commute I spotted a crab, the marine animal not a
grouchy person.

You say what is so odd about that, I seem them every time I go to the
beach. Thing is it was nowhere near a beach (on a street in NYC) and it
was the size of a frisbee. I figure somebody's dinner escaped before
the boiling pot.

In any case it was certainly odd.

I agree absolutely, Claire. I see and hear many things I ordinarily
wouldn't while driving. Here in Colorado, bald eagles and hawks aren't
too unusual for me to see. I frequently see prairie falcons perched
just a few yards from me. Peregrines are a lot more skittish but I
occasionally see even those.

A year or two ago there was a dead deer on the side of the road. I'm
sure motorists saw that also, but my view was a little more up close.

I think there's no better way to see Rocky Mountain National Park than
by bike. I rode up Trail Ridge Road to Hidden Valley last Friday. I see
and hear many things I wouldn't have otherwise.

covey of quail flying backwards.

In Jersey we get to see lots of interesting birds: Seagulls, Hawks, Eagles
(possibly a Bald Eagle or Golden Eagle) and lots of Turkey Vultures.

On some of our rides we come across dead dear with Turkey Vultures
feasting. Cyclist sneak up on them and scare them as we pass. It's a
little unnerving to scare an almost 4 ft tall bird!

We see lots of other animals, so far no bears (and I hope I don't run
into any).

It's this sort of thing that I adore about cycling too. Yesterday I was out
for a pootle and in the fields I saw several hares. Lovely animals. Deer
don't take flight as quickly as they do when I pass and I'm in driver mode.
Pheasants just remain on the verge as I cycle by within inches of them,
bunnies look cute in best "Thumper" mode, without zooming off in fright as
with a car...

I have been crapped on by Great Blew Herons, Red Tailed Hawks, and White
Tailed Deer during my commutes along the Fox River (suburban
chicagoland).

The herons are the worst. poopjugs.
