  1. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem?

I have a Klein road bike less than a year old with Ultegra drive chain. Light, expensive and a great ride. After about 6 months it seemed to start flexing more than I had noticed previously and I had to ease off the rear brakes to prevent the rear wheel rubbing the brake pads when pedaling hard. I tightened the spokes and trued the wheels in an attempt to prevent the problem (along with having the LBS service the bike) but the only thing that worked was adjusting out the brakes. I was always puzzled why this problem suddenly came into existance when the bike seemed reasonable stiff at first with no excessive flexing.

Yesterday a creak developed whenever I pedaled harder and seemed to get progressively worse. After the ride I investigated the creak for some time before I noticed what appreas to be a crack in the bottom bracket shell, drive side about 10mm in from the face running parallel to the plane of the cranks for about a quarter of the circumfrence of the shell.

The LBS I purchased from is looking into it with a view to getting a replacement frame from Klein under warrantee. They said they had never seen a crack like that one before (running parallel to the crank plane). I'm just wondering if cracking like this is common? Has anyone else had problems with frames cracking? Has anyone else had problems with Klein?

I ride for pleasure and fitness and have only done 2,400km on the bike. I treat the bike with tender loving care and have had no accidents.

    Thanks

    Pat

No...No... Stuff happens. It's not a federal case.

  3. Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me, maybe due to the threading of the shell or installation of the BB. Your LBS should get you a quick warranty replacement frame from Klein...no debate here.

Klein makes good on their lifetime warranty. Bro sent one back last year. No problem and the bike was over 2 years old. A new bike should be a no brainer.
