  1. I freely admit that I had a certain advantage (Or several) but this was fun!

Cycling back from work yesterday on the fixer and having suffered
massively reduced mileage recently (Getting podgy!) I thought I'd add a
few miles and a hill climb as apposed to the "straight up Leith Walk"
route. So a quick detour and the route over Arthur's Seat. As I
approached the base of the climb, I picked up another cyclist on a road
bike coming from the other direction and I started the climb slightly
ahead of him (~4 metres). As I climbed I realised that he was on my
wheel and when (With the sound of heavy breathing) he passed me, I
figured that there was no way in hell I was staying with him. I'd have
guessed late 30s, slim build (not carrying any obvious excess weight),
on a Dura-Ace equipped Trek OCLV and we were just approaching the
steepest bit. I was already standing up in a comfortable rhythm but did
see myself going any quicker until the crest. As he had passed, I pulled
my cap down so that I wouldn't see where he was and try and sit on his
wheel, but could continue at my own pace. About half-way up the steep
bit I noticed a rear wheel creeping into view. I matched him at the
crest and he looked over and smiled so I suggested that his problem was
too many gears. Part in jest, and partly as he appeared to be
    crosschaining big-big.

We chatted about his bike (Which was very Bling!) and riding and he
suggested that I come along to the ERC club runs. We rode together and
chatted until the start of the descent where I said goodbye and went
hell for leather (32mph on a 72" fixed gear!) down the hill!

In his defence, this was a final hill at the end of a ride of unknown
length, and a new bike that he was still getting used to.

I was riding the fixer (Which is looking increasingly shabby) and in
practical mode. One pannier, battery pack for headlight, mudguards etc.

I actually felt for the guy (Sorry if you're reading this), as I know
    how I'd feel.

Anyway, smug mode off. Back to coding!

That's great, nice story! Made me chuckle anyway.

But you had the advantage of the "flywheel effect" and weren't able to
change down and kick back...as you've probably realised by now, it's the
downhills that are the trouble on a fixie, not the climbs!

Funny you should mention the climb on Arthur's Seat. It is a personal
favourite and seems very popular. Your post has spurred me into doing
something I have meant to do for a while.

I am putting up a web page where people can record their personal best times
for the climb from St. Margaret's Loch to Dunsapie Loch. It won't be
    anything too complex. Check out
    http://www.modemoperandi.co.uk/arthursseat/
in a couple of days time.

If you send in your time you could be the first to get your name on.

    Tom.

And feedback would be gratefully received. I think I'll leave my own name
off but I'll try to push some of the Edinburgh Road Club members to give it
their best shot. They trained round Arthur's Seat a few Saturdays ago so
    they should know the way.

I'll time it next time I'm out. Will there be a possibility for
revisions, I'm expecting my fitness to increase as the weather improves!

Yes. I think an improvement over time is probably better than a fast time.
It's not an easy climb. I am hoping to get some advice from a fitness expert
about how a climb like that can be used to improve fitness to add to the
    site.

Climb it. Work out how long it takes.
    Climb it again, but faster.
If you didn't blow up at the top then you didn't climb fast enough.
If you blew up before the top, you went off too hard.

    Rinse.
    Repeat.

This time it looks like there will be a race up the side of Arthurs Seat.
    I'd better get training. :-)

Start at the barrier at the point where the Queen's Drive starts to climb up
behind the car park at St Margaret's Loch. Finish when you reach Dunsapie
Loch, just past the first orange coloured parking area.

I am working on the site tonight. It should be up by tomorrow evening,
Friday at the latest. I am chasing up some training advice to add to it.
Something along the lines of remember to take it easy if you have not
    exercised for a while.

    Tom.

  13. The site is up. You can see it at

    http://www.tomorr.dsl.pipex.com/index.htm

    Comments would be very welcome.

    Regards

    Tom Orr.

We did the race down last year. I guess if we race up, then we all have
to saunter really slowly down the hill! ;-)
