I am looking to replace my Marin hybrid with one of the '04 Giant flat bar road bikes and have a (potentially silly) question about the frame size I should get.as I will be buying the new one by mail order so can'r have the opportunity to try it anywhere.
I have a Giant road bike in a medium size as it is a compact so presumably the same size should apply to the new bike as well? With it being mail order I don't wanna get into a bun fight over sending it back if it's the wrong size. Aside from that any comments from Giant FCR 0 owners welcome!
I have an FCR - the compact road frame on the FCR's is the same as the compact road frame on other GIANT models so sizing shouldn't be a problem.
It's a nice bike and I find it great for training rides - I prefer the flat bar position for hill climbing and find I can get good acceleration from the bike.

Don't. Get it at your LBS. You won't pay very much more, you'll get one the right size, you'll get it properly assembled, and you'll get a free service/checkup. Also, if something does go wrong, it's _much_ less hassle to take it back and get it sorted.

Wise words there from Simon. A further point is that the Giant compact frames are made to fit you by swapping stems and, in some cases, seat posts. This is part of the price in a shop but I'd guess you'd pay extra for the replacements mail order. -- Michael MacClancy

I realise that Simon but that was the point of my OP - if I could have gone to my LBS I would have known about the frame sizing as I could have tried it for size. Believe me this would have been my preference for all the valid reasons you cite.
Fact is that the bike I refer to is a 2004 model, discontinued for 2005, and my LBS can't get hold of them. Looks like mail order is my only option but I am reasonably reassured that the frame size will be the same and I can at least replicate the set up of my Giant OCR so I shouldn't be too far away.

Possibly silly question but... if you want a flat barred racer, why not swap out the componentry on the OCR? I don't know that the FCR geometry is any different (I'm sure that's one of it's selling points!) and an alloy flat bar and some RapidFire shifters will cost less than a whole new bike.
If you're trying to get the best of both worlds, then fair enough... although I'm not actually convinced by the flat bar thing. Especially if you're already used to riding drops!

I am really trying to get the best of both worlds to be honest. My OCR is a bike I don't wanna part with (until I can afford the TCR I want that is ;-)). To be honest I intend to use them both in equal measure and the benefit of flat bars is that they will keep me slightly more upright when my bad back kicks in!! They are both great bikes and I have to confess to being a bit of a Giant fan these days - the FCR will be a bargain.
