  1. Hello,

As an editor of a Dutch traveling site (www.reisomdewereld.nl), I'm looking
for interesting walking areas all over the world. Our readers are
adventurers. We would like to put together a top-10 of the most interesting
    walking destinations in the world.

I'd like to hear from you what's your personal top-5 or top-10. Please give
    me country, region, and place.

    Thank you very much.

Now I don't think I got out of the wrong side of bed this morning, so I
don't think I'm being unreasonable when I ask, why? What's in it for us?

And if your readers are 'adventurers', why can't you ask them?

    Well if they are adventurers I would reccomend;

    Mogadishu,
    Aceh,
    Bangkok right now
    Chechnya,
    Iraq,
    Syria,
    Lebanon,
    West Bank,
    Rwanda,

    Thats a good starter list.

Sounds like a good career for an independant television journalist.

    Rwanda,

does not belong in that list, being very much a touristed country
right now. Still a bit off the beaten track, but in the current
climate , quite an acceptable destination.

Personally I find these glossy top 10 articles a joke.. They are
always the busy places, or the down right inaccessable..... And they
are always balanced to the readership. We have all seen the top hill
lists and articles trotted out in Trail *****er! And they all give
the impression that the hills/scenery runs out north of Penrith.

I didn't doubt you for a moment. I think that Holidays in the
Danger Zone was fascinating. I just wanted to add my own spin.

    Places that dont exist...

Another angle...that I wish I had thought up, but inspired by the not
existing bit.... We should send them this list of great walking
    destinations....

    Ruritania
    Borsetshire
    Brig O'Doon
    Oz
    Ultima Thule
    Bacteria
    Atlantis
    Utopia
    Mordor
    Glenbogle

    Happy hiking......

    West Bank,

Down there on Sunday. The Snig, followed by the Swan, then the Main
Top, which is as close to Beirut as you'll find in this country!

You rotten lot! Could at least have given a couple of answers before the
sarky ones. After all, the chap did ask a walking question on a walking
newsgroup. We wouldn't want to be mistaken for one of these America
    newgroups now would we?
(teacher mode off - not that I am one)

    Anyway, how about :
    1) the Pyrenees in general, and Ordessa in particular
    2) Skye: Cuillin Ridge

    for starters.

  15. well if you wanted a beiruit of london, do the circle line drinking
challenge.. if you make a half a pint a stop on the circle line, by
the time you get to the end you'll feel like your in beirut...

and if you dont make a half at every stop and get to the end, you have
to do it the following weekend.

can you handle 14 pints and the undergrounds stairs+escalators 🙂

    Suitably shamed...

A 'must do' for any walker that has remained surprisingly hidden from many
is south Lancashire. Described as 'magisterially chthonic' and 'a landscape
mixing the baroque and gothic in a distinctive way', the unique charms of
this area seem only to be appreciated by the locals and attract few
visitors. This may be because the distinctive black screes can make walking
hard work at times, but perseverance brings its own reward as views of rocks
laid down in the Carboniferous period soon extend as far as one could wish.
Visitors making the effort to appreciate this singular part of the world
will find that it amply repays their efforts by leaving memories that will
not fade as the years and decades pass.

    How's that?

I think its up to us as individuals as to how we react to someone
who wishes to profiteer from our experiences. His mistake was in
revealing his real purpose. If he'd just come on here a Joe McDokes
he would have generated a really interesting thread.

The irony here for me is that IME the Dutch are far more adventurous
travellers than the brits and he would get a much richer response in
the nl newsgroups than this one.

End? It's the circle line! Is it like the end of the rainbow? 🙂

    Syria,

It might suprise you if you have not been, but the Dead Cities area in
    Syria
(Jerada, Ruweiha, Serjilla and Al-Bara, ghost-towns in the hills to
the west of the Aleppo-Hama highway) has a remarkable simalarity to
much of the higher British land, dry-stone walls and all.

Just done a quick search, and

    http://www.thisisvlad.com/gallery/allepo/mini_IMG_5165

is the best I can find on t'web, to back up such a claim
but this one has to prove it (sheep)

    http://www.thisisvlad.com/gallery/allepo/mini_IMG_5176

I recon this area does have some potential for walking as do the
    Lebanon mountains.
