Now that brings back memories. Some years ago I used to commute to work
on the Hythe-Southampton ferry - with a bike, of course. I wonder if
they still carry bikes for free? And to think some people pay thousands
to see the same view from a cruise ship! Cycling along Hythe pier was
always an effort of concentration - dodging the cracks between the planks.

Yes they do. I use it a fair bit as my in-laws live in Hythe.
Its also an excellent way to reach the New Forest.

That hasn't changed, especially at the sea end.
The planks are presently being replaced with new from the land end.
You can sponsor a plank and have a name or message engraved.
They are still laid along the pier instead of across and anyone with
narrow tyres risks a 'nasty'.

There's always the little pier train though, but I've never asked to put
a big bike on it, only the Brommie.

Itchen Bridge is free for bikes. Vi0ews over the city and down Southampton
Water.

Glad it's not just me then. The estuary in Dundee slopes in just the
same way when I take pictures..

Nice to appreciate the weather rather than just fuming about the traffic

When I were a boy there was a "floating bridge" and IMO that bridge is
an ugly eyesore that has the side effect of making car commuting quick
and easy.

But, in answer to your question; yes you can ride across it (and walk)
for free. I've never done it but from a taxi I've always thought the
gradient might be a bit on the steep side. You also benefit from 6"
cycle lanes. Although they may just be road edge markings. Easy mistake
to make where Hampshire County Council are concerned.

The gradient isn't too bad. However, there is a death-trap-waiting-to-happen
at the bottom on the city side where the cycle lane runs round the outside
lane of the roundabout. I wouldn't like to come haring off the bridge in
that lane straight into the path of a SMIDSY, so I never use it. Bus drivers
often sound their horns at me for not using the farcility as I hold them up
for, ooh, seconds at a time.

I don't think I've ever seen it; I noticed it on the map before the M27 was

bring 'em on, I would have done le Pont de Normandie had I been allowed,
instead I had a very nice 40 km detour inland to le Pont de Tancarville in
pitch dark and back through a French nuclear wasteland to reach my hotel at
0040 which was of course shut ;-(

I have, lots. It's not too bad. The gradient is no worse than
Lance's Hill, which is the alternative if you cross at Northam.

Indeed, the cycle lanes are rubbish. And the expansion joints can be
a bit hard.
