My dialup back then was via Austpac which I needed for distance
education to Qld. The rates were a killer especially when I was
hamstrung by a 2400 modem. Luckily a mate at RMIT got me an account
there; telnet seemed awesome back then.

The Mac Classic I used at work had a 20MB hard drive, 16 MHz processor,
4MB RAM, and a huge 9" black and white screen. Man, what a machine. You
basically had to plan every move prior to hitting any buttons or be
prepared to go and get a coffee while you waited for a screen redraw.

There was a local provider in Brissy but no such thing as unlimited
internet. Plan ahead, get in, get what you want, get out.

1998 for me, so I'm a total newbie. Interestingly, my first five posts include contributing to the shaving debate, bagging helmets, offering assistance in teaching an adult to ride a bike (still trying there), trying to sell my old bike trailer (eventually gave it to a cow-worker with brats), and musing about building a bike frame...

Funny, very little has changed. I still bag helmets, I'm still trying to get my partner to ride, but at least now I've finally gotten off my [censored] and built that bike frame I harped on about for years 🙂

I have a Mac Pus uh Plus sitting at home..

100mb external SCSI hdd (cost more than a whole PC), 8Mhz, 1mb RAM, same
9" monochrome monitor 🙂

I think it's gonna be another ebay victim..
anyone want to make a geek fish-tank out of it?

Hmmm, you got me thinking so I had a Google Groups search. First post
of mine I could find was "Wed, Sep 25 1991 7:22 pm". Not in this group
however - I am a newbie here.

At the time I would have been using an IBM PS/2 Model 30. 10MHz 286,
1MB RAM, 30MB Disk - but at least it had VGA and a 14" screen!

Hehehe. I could just imagine Perry on a petrol powered 'bent trike.

Somehow I doubt it would ever happen though. The problem with Perry isn't so much a lack of balance or fitness, as a lack of road skills (or desire to obtain road skills). He's never driven a car, and always used public transport or walked, so if you put him on a road, on a bicycle or whatever, he doesn't enjoy himself.

I'm considering a tandem, as then he can go on the back and I can worry about steering and avoiding 4wds etc. He's usually happy enough as the passenger in a car (when we hire one).

I think he'd object about the petrol bit on principle, too...

My first Mac had two floppy drives (no HD). One for the system floppy and the other for all the applications AND all your work.

I used the Plus for 6 years before we got a PC. We didn't have a hdd to
start with so everything was done with the single fdd. No wonder it's
worn out! The hdd cost 2/3 the price of the Mac.
