    Someone answer me this...
I used to do cardio almost every day. I was underweight, but I wanted to
stay in shape. I also lifted almost every single day. There were little to
no gains. Lately I have undergone a very unhealthy lifestyle change. All I
do anymore is drink until I'm drunk almost every night, work, eat, sleep,
and lift maybe 2 or 3 times a week. I am undergoing huge changes and am at
a very stressful point in my life. The part I'm curious about is why I am
making gains currently with this new plan. I have been able to lift more
than I ever have before and have been gaining decent amounts of weight. I
understand that soon this is probably all going to catch up with me... but
why am I making gains while living like this? My lifestyle is much
unhealthier than it was before, but currently I am benefiting from it. Is
it because I'm lifting less and eating more?

I would say that's it. Lifting less often, you're recovering better
than when you were overdoing it on a daily basis. Eating and sleeping
more is just icing on the cake as far as your body recovering and
    growing is concerned.

Not "probably"! You will make gains but the Alcohol gives you very low
quality sleep. You wake up tired and look like you've been up all night.

It will also help you get fatter quicker (for a few different reasons),
and lock you into a deppresive state of mind as well as a depressed energy
    levels.

and (assuming you dont "fix up"😉 it will punish your liver amongst other
    things.

Yeah... I've read the literature on this also... but for some reason this is
not the case for me. That's why I'm so curious about this. It seems to be
having the opposite effect with me.

IMO, it's the absence of cardio, and the reduced frequency with the
lifting. Lifting heavy every other day, while getting plenty of sleep
and calories is a good prescription for getting big and strong.

But he's right about the alcohol. It will catch up with you
eventually. You'll probably make even better gains now if you just
cut it down to say 3 drinks a night.

Er. Didnt your OP allude to general low energy levels. Sleeping all the
time. Etc. Sure you can train but if you feel lazy the rest of the time ??
I dont see where anything you described is "opposite" to what I said. Could
    you clarify?

Also, when you liver is getting punished you dont feel anything straight
away. If you dont go to the doctor, keep a close "eye" in the appearance of
the whites of your eyes. Esp when sober.

  11. maybe you're drunk and just think you're lifting more

you sound drunk, because you said
"I have been able to lift more than I ever have before"
"I'm lifting less and eating more"

on a less jovial note (though maybe making an ass of myself)

beer probably has a lot of calories - though i imagine it's mostly fat
.. Maybe the calories from beer are helping?! No doubt there are
better sources of calories. The beer would be a factor in your weight
    gain.

the main thing is as ppl said, the exercising every day was
    overtraining.

You may have made a new discovery, it's remotely possible that the
alcohol is helping you lift because of its neurological effect.
A big factor in how much you lift is neurological- you can get really
strong without increasing muscle mass (Steve Freides is doing it - not
    using alcohol though).
So maybe the alcohol is having some positive neurological effect. I
doubt it though, because it shouldn't cause your brain to recruit
muscle fibres better or in greater numbers.

I strongly suggest you join a support group or get advice somehow about
quitting your alcohol addiction. Also, it would test if the alcohol is
helping the lifting - though I doubt that it is, and it's not worth the
other ill effects. You can get strong enough working out every other
day without alcohol. Try it! I think you'll probably increase your
lifts once you get rid of the alcohol and replace it with equivalent
    high calory food.

Not necessarily but in this case it was certainly hurting gains.

The guy is simply getting more calories and training less often. A good
way to get gains. However the Alcohol abuse will bite him hard. Luckily
he's young and has time to avoid serious liver damage. Unfortunately, he
also thinks he's impervious to the long term effects of alcohol abouse.
    Let's hope that changes.

I strongly suggest they first try to butch up and sort out the problem
