A friend here at work is complaining of bruising on her legs for no apparent reason. She has had 5-6 very large bruises on her legs over the last few weeks. There is no pain associated with the bruising and she can't recall anything that would cause these bruises. She is very fit, exercises daily and 46 years old.
Naturally I told her to go see a doctor, but I did say I would post here and see if there are any ideas.

I have known a couple of people with this problem that was improved with citrus bioflavinoids. These are cheap and non toxic. So loading up on this stuff would not present a problem. I would probably take some Vitamin C with it too.

My experiences with that are a bit extreme :-) Whenever I hear of unexplained bruising, I hope that person gets a blood test done. However, if the bruising is confined to the legs and there are no petechia, I have to wonder if she's just been bumping into things. My wife gets bruises on her legs all the time, and it's BECAUSE she's active and does things all day that she ends up bumping her legs.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor: http://www.abmdr.org.au/ http://www.marrow.org/

In my experience, unexplained brusing usually occus after a night of drinking. People will smack into something and not remember it.

AFAIK Andrea drinks very moderately. I don't think that is it.
I smack into the corner of my bed frame at least once weekly, with one or the other leg. There is a mere two feet of space between the bed and the dresser in front, and the ergonomics of the room aren't the best. The bruise is always in the same height on each leg, on the side, back, or front depending on which way I was facing when it happened, and is always gigantic because I tend to be moving quickly when I do it and scrape myself along the sharp wooden corner, as opposed to just bumping into it. Icing immediately with a bag of frozen peas doesn't do a thing to lessen the severity. These bruises also tend to leave "stains" or "shadows" of themselves for months, sometimes up to 6 months.
I've always been an easy bruiser so I don't think anything of it, and I'm otherwise in good health. But people tend to cringe when they see them.

Get her to a doctor, Keith. And the sooner the better. Just to be sure. Unexplained bruises....very probably nothing, very tiny possibility of something. This I know.

Yeah. What I told her. She leaves for Hawaii on Monday and she promised to go to the doctor when she gets back. In all likelihood it is nothing. She also has asthma and takes corticosteroids.

But I'll certainly push for your advice.
I have been told that taking anti-inflammatories can be a cause of this sort of bruising. She takes then from time to time for back issues. So maybe the corticosteroids?

Yeah, it probably is the corticostreroids. But I still advised her to get a doctor to look.

Tomorrow, you hear? Doctor. Blood test.
I hear, but I'm not sure she is going to.
Tell her the nurse agrees with Stephen. Most likely nothing, small chance something very, very, bad, and best trested as early as possible.

She maintains she will go as soon as she gets back from Hawaii - three weeks down the road.
What is the very, very bad and small possibility thing?

Liver issues, low platelet, low Vit K......does she use aspirin or NSAID's on a regular basis? Does she drink alot? Any of these can lead to bruising. Like the other poster said, blood test will tell the tale. Kristen

Whatever she wants. It's her business.

It's probably nothing. But it could be one of a number of diseases affecting the blood, or the liver, or the immune system. Leukemia, for example.
