  1. Can somebody tell me the relation between time, heart rate, slope,
speed and calories on a tread mill. I am 29 5"9 198 pounnds. I want to
    loose 20 pounds.

I can run for 25 minutes on slope=3 and speed=5 miles/hour but my heart
rate shoots up to 180. The weight loss program on the tread mill
recommends 30 min of run with slope=0 and speed =3.2

Should I follow the program or should I go as fast as I can go?

    Thanks

Go as hard as you can for atleast 20 minutes. Ignore heart rate unless you
start feeling dizzy. 180 at your age is nothing to be worried about.

Better still, walk or jog slowly till your heart rate gets up to about
130-140, then sprint as hard as you can till you get your heart rate to
about 190 or more without feeling sick and hold speed for as long as you are
comfortable for a max of about 5-6 mins, then slow down till your heart rate
by jogging or walking to 140. I just hit the emergency stop to slow down
from the sprint. Keep repeating this as long as you can from 20 mins to 1
hour. Or, if you are a member of a gym that does Body Attack do that
    instead.

calculate your energy expenditure per day, and eat 500 calories less than
    that. Use www.fitday.com

    Lift heavy weights.

You will lose 20 pounds in 20 weeks. How of that will be fat is upto how
hard you lifted, during that time and how much protein you ingested.

You can get a lot fancier than this, but this is the basics of what you need
    to do.

  3. npne is right. I do 30-40minutes of cardio a day keeping my HR at 130.
Generally if you go faster than that on an empty stomach your body
cannot burn fat fast enough and will start using muscle for fuel. Diet
is the key...no amount of speed, temp, distance will bunr enough
calories to make up for eating a lot of junk food.

    Why not ??

  5. Weight lifting has nothing to do with burning fat. To burn fat, you
need to do low-intensity cardio. When you sprint or do other
fast/high-intensity workouts, your body first uses stored ATP for fuel
(a few seconds) and then it will start to convert stored glycogen to
ATP. Converting glycogen to ATP is a relatively simple and fast process
compared to converting fat, but it creates a bi-product called lactic
acid which will eventually prohibit your muscles from contracting. For
long, sustained activity levels, your body can use the slower process
of converting stored fat to ATP. This process requires oxygen (aerobic)
and does not produce as much ATP as glycogen and will therefore only be
used when your energy demands are low. If you feel burning (lactic
acid) or if you are not breathing steadily, you are using glycogen for
fuel instead of fat. You should run at a pace that you feel you can
sustain for very long periods of time if losing weight is your goal.
    Hope that helps.

Reminds me of my refeed after long runs.

Every Saturday am was long run day and I was working up to marathon
distance. (FWIW I wouldn't train like this again if I were to do another
marathon - I'd do far more pace work and LSD mebbe every second week.)

So I started at 16 mile runs and worked up to 24 over about 3 months.
After the run I'd come home and have breakfast. 12 eggs, lb of bacon, loaf
of brown bread and mebbe some hash browns.

Then as often or not I'd sleep.

Talk about undoing the training benefit in one fell swoop!

    :^)

Fast track to injury (either an overuse injury a very nasty fall).

    This is terrible advice.

BTW, anything that you can do for 5-6 minutes is not a "sprint" (in your case,
it's probably slower than my half-marathon race pace)

    miles * weight * 100 / 137

slope has a big impact on energy cost, Daniels running formula by Jack
    Daniels has the numbers.

    Quoted message said:

Recommend putting the incline down to 0. Your heart rate should be elevated,
but you should feel like you can keep going for another 30 minutes at the end
    of your run.

3.2mph is too slow. Most people have trouble running this slowly. Keep using
5.0 mph but reduce the incline, and take short walk breaks every 5 minutes
or so if you need to.

I'd also recommend building up to longer workouts as your fitness allows --
    more like 40 minutes.
