After all the reflector chat, I thought I'd put in my two cents.
As an alternative to just yanking off all the reflectors, I put reflective tape on my rims, cranks, and frame. You hardly notice the silvery grey tape on the grey paint job or aluminum. Great spots are where the frame might get dinged anyway. Just like my helmet, I think they will serve me better in court than in a mishap.
As to lights, I've switched to two headlights and two tail lights. Aside from redundancy, and being able to aim the headlights to different spots, having two tail lights blinking a few inches apart creates a very eye catching effect.

At the risk of repeating myself, I've said it before and I'll say it again, redundancy is a Good Thing, for the reasons you mention and the reason you imply: if one headlamp or taillamp should burn out or suffer a loss of battery power, you have backup.

right! the strip idea is an interesting comparison to the more fashionable reflector. paint. i have a dacco raytheon? led flashlight-metal case-once carried by walmart. painted a dull silver. I frequently lose it at night but scanning closely, always find it dull but visible grey in the dark. the laws aren't up to the ends.
