I've been wearing mountain bike shoes with my road bike, and decided for my new pair of shoes to do it "right" and get road shoes. Same brand/quality level as the mtn bike shoes, so the shoe itself is perfect. The problem is in the walking.
I have basic SPD mtn bike pedals/cleats and it doesn't appear anyone makes a cleat cover for this style. I'm not worried so much about the awkwardness of walking in them (put someone my size in spandex and there's plenty to laugh at without worrying about how I walk), but rather about damaging the cleat and/or the floors of any building I might happen into whilst out on the road. Any suggestions?

Shimano does make rubber footed outboard "pontoons" that you may be able to adapt to help a bit.
They used to have the pontoons available seperately as part number Y-426 98060, but I am not sure if they still do as they have moved more towards the SPD-SL style for road.
