The email makes out that phoning them is teh second-best option, but
actually, once you've fought your way past teh voice-activated
machines and got to a human being, that's much teh best way to go
about it.

I'm a bit concerned that there's no indication in any of their blurb
about what you'll get in exchange, and that tehrefore I might get
something less solid, or smaller, or otherwise inappropriate.

I received mine this morning, and its equivalent to the one I sent in.
It has an orange section on it branded "Kryptonite Evolution".
They get my vote.

Yes. Looks identical except that it has a more traditional key.

It was just the lock and theft protection form - not retail carton.

My two locks arrived today, just under two weeks after I sent the old
ones off. There was one final addressing problem - the label got my
house number, road, town and postcode right, but apparently Hampshire is
now part of Italy! Even so, it got here from Illinois in three days, so
they must be shipping these hefty packages by air.

I think they're providing whatever the nearest current equivalent is to
your old one. Mine were over a decade old so it seems churlish to
complain about the shiny new ones, but they "feel" lighter and cheaper
than the oldies, and the shackle certainly wobbles more. The shorter
model is definitely an inch or so shorter than the one it replaced,
though the long one seems about the same.

My only big problem is that the new barrels are slightly thicker, so
they won't fit into the old brackets. Anyone got any recommendations for
replacement brackets?

I'm quite impressed, really - I half thought Kryptonite would go bust
before they managed to deliver thousands of new locks, so all credit to
them.

My replacement lock arrived in a thin torn clear plain plastic bag
insecurely placed inside an open-ended plain cardboard box, along with
instructions and two keys. I'm surprised the lock was still in the box
when it got here. It appears to be similar to the original so far as
outside dimensions are concerned. However, it is loose in the old carry
bracket, though I'll probably be able to adjust that. No new bracket is
supplied.

My pair came in a jiffy bag, inside which each had its own clear plain
plastic bag containing instructions and keys.

Though I had a mona about the delay last week I'm quite pleased now,
especially as the older lock was 15 years old and not quite as smooth to
open as it used to be.

I don't carry mine in brackets on the bikes, so I don't know how
different (if any) the dimensions are.

The lock I returned had a clear internal dimension when locked of
293mm. The replacement I have received measures 205mm and is too
short to go round the seat vertical of a trice and an adjacent
vertical. This is not fit for teh purpose I was using teh previous
lock.

I emailed on Friday, and I'll give them a little while.

I'm a bit nervous that no-one (so fasr as I can determine) has ever
received an email from Kryptonite regarding this scheme except the
standard precomposed ones that everyone has got. I don't fancy
spending my money on a transatlantic 'phone call to sort it out, which
is what their web site suggests.

Anyway, we shall see.

If it comes to that, have a look at Telediscount.co.uk and see what
they're offering for the US; I've seen them offer UK local rate calls
for the US.

You just dial their machine and then dial the international number
they want. The only downside is they charge as soon as their machine
picks up, but for the ultra-low rates they offer....

I used to use them to phone a friend in Kazakhstan (5p a minute at the
time!), so I can guarantee it works and there's no con involved.
