Is there any area of the Pentlands which is normally free of sheep?

The only area guaranteed free would likely be under crop. There are some
small plantations which are fenced off, although the standard of fencing
cannot be guaranteed. However, the from Bavelaw, over Kitchen Moss, past
the Bore Stane to East Cairn Hill is often sheep free. Plus, the views
are expansive enough that you'd likely see any a long way off. This
could be continued past Wolf Craigs (my fave bit) and Craigengar. As a
general rule, the further from the farms, and the higher up you go, the
less sheep you'll see.
Is this to do with exercising a dog? If so, you're right to ask - there
has been more than one instance of a dog off leash being shot.

Had a problem finding Craigengar on the Harvey Pentland but succeeded
eventually through Multimap and cross referencing it!
Curious to know how you link all this route together! Is it a day walk or do
you do it in bits?

Just looked at the Harveys - I see that Craigengar isn't named.
I've walked all over these areas on many occasions, but not as a one-off
journey. West Cairn, Wolf Craigs etc can be done from Little Vantage.
I've done this as a circular route over Byrehope Mount, down to
Baddingsgill through the nature trail and back over the Cauldstane Slap
(of course, this can be done from the South too by drivig up to
Baddinsgill).
The other circular route you might want to try would be to start at the
road end at Bavelaw Mill Farm, along the track (fenced off, so
normally sheep free) towards Listonshiels (back on leash here), up to
the Bore Stane, over Kitchen Moss to the top of the Logan Burn and back
to Bavelaw.
As your original question suggested, you will have to keep an eye open
for sheep, and you might want to avoid some of the open moorland in
early spring as it's used by nesting birds.

Thanks, but I wasn't the originator of the thread! :-)
Appreciate the route suggestions that I'll save for another day.
Go safely and enjoy your walking.
