    Diagonal's fine. You just need to be able to move the axle towards or
    away from the bottom bracket in order to tension the chain. Nothing more.

    Either. You need at least 1/2" of movement back and forth.

    The very best sort are the old (pre mid 80's ?) 'horizontal' road dropouts.
    They room for adjustment to allow for a flip flop hub and an angle to keep
    the brake blocks on the rim.
