  1. After spending last Sunday inside thinking deep thoughts about ethics
and then trying to put them onto paper I'm hanging out for a ride on
    Sunday. Who's in?

Blah can you bring that Bird Noises CD and this time I'll get it when we
    stop for muffins.

Gags what chance of a water rocket display ...err I mean discussion on
    bike lights at Gagstronics.

There's a choice of 3 rides I want to do over the weekend, and I
should probably only do one of them. I haven't yet decided which one,
so I might not be there this weekend.

Of course, the weather can throw all sorts of different sized spanners
    into the works.

I wanna see the lights and rockets though 🙂

I was keen for Sunday but I just remembered that I have to take Lindsay into
Melbourne Uni for her induction day into college......I am going to drive
her car back home as she doesn't get a carpark in first year. Guess the
water rockets and lights will prob have to wait until the week after.

I'm planning on doing the BR this Sunday.
I've been absent for a few weeks. Been AUDAX riding, SingleSpeed racing or recovering from same. Was thinking of riding last week but still felt 'spent' from the Salute to Irene Plowman AUDAX ride on the friday night. More from getting cold & very late to bed than the riding I think.

    Ride report:

8 starters... the hills are still there.. Bus stop to Kangaroo Ground times:

    essendon93 - 12:3x !!!
    me - 12:58
    others - ?

Overall ride numbers from my counters...

    Dist: 85.83
    Time: 2.965hrs
    Avg: 28.95
    Temp: 18.3 - overcast
    Wind: 11 SSE
    Humidity: 70%
    Max speed: 87.9

Average was up _again_ from last week.. Few of us hit the Doncaster Rd
tram/road works on the way. I hope they are resurfacing that road! One
'toot' this week from a car driver who was delayed for all of 10 seconds
behind us, and SomeYoungBogan(tm) in a Falcon yelling out "BMX bandits" or
similar.. thanks for your input mate.. 🙂

See you all next week, and/or at Kew on Wednesday.. ess93 get down there
racing, you'll do well on that hill...

    cheers,

I went for an mbtc ride instead. About 11 of us.

For the Dandenong to Mordialloc part, we were averaging about 16km/h.
At one point, myself and 2 others went ahead, before discovering,
er... we went too far. I had been struggling against the wind, doing
18km/h, then on the way back, I was doing 35 km/h along the flat
    gravel.

Ate at Mordialloc (I brought my own lunch, but then got jeolous of
some of the other's fish and chips, so got a yummy peice of fish too),
then the faster people decided to go the long way to a house in
Brighton, and the slower went a short way. Ours was mostly down beach
road. We started with a 3 people peloton, but then one guy dropped
back. Doubled our morning average, with a nice tail wind in parts,
and beat the short-cutters by about 10 minutes.

Best part of the day? Flying past a fittish looking guy on a kitted up
road bike down beach road, on my GVBR bike with a laden pannier.
Credit there belongs to the fit old guy on a road bike I was
drafting. He had just come back from the Tassie ride, and lived in
Dandenong, so gets plenty of uphill practice.

12.34 on the Warrandyte climb. I had nothing left in the tank at the top. As for the racing, I did a few laps at Kew on Sunday and I need some serious work on that hairpin. What speed do you take the corner at? I kept coming in too hot, and having to brake more than I should. Plus my endurance still needs work, its one thing going hard for 12min, but 40 is another matter.

See if you can get a practice session in with Dutch and Gags. I joined
in for one around Christmas and although FD abused me for braking on my
first couple of laps, by the end of 4 or 5 laps it was starting to make
sense, especially the speed on that hairpin and not braking. From memory
there is a turn signal on the road just before the hairpin and the idea
is to not stop pedalling till you reach that. Had me sh#$%ing myself the
first few times (hence the brakes) but you start to get used to it, not
that I'm about to start racing on Wednesdays, it'd be quicker for me to
just give the $5 to Gags and GPLama.

Speed around that corner - no idea.. its hairy enough without having to
take my eyes off the road to check the speed!.. As DaveB said, keep to
the right of the turn arrow on the outside and drift into the corner
from that. I only stuffed the corner once and came up the inside of
someone, I kept to the inside of the turn on the exit so not to run
anyone off the road (and let them get a better run out of it)..

I thought my enduro would be a problem too, but on the day it wasnt. I
was going to stick at the back of the bunch for my first race to scope
the whole thing out... well.. that didnt go to plan.. So I'll try this
    with C on Wednesday..

12:34 on Warrandyte Climb????? he meant the time on your bike, not in your
    car!!!!

As for Kew crits, I have no idea of speed on that hairpin but you definately
want to start from outside of the arrow on the road.....I just basically
click down two gears as I enter the corner and that seems to be about right
for the climb up the hill.....except for the last lap when I leave it in a
bigger gear for the final sprint.

I would definately recommend a few practices at staying out of the saddle
from the hairpin right up to the finish line at the top of the hill
(especially if you have got chicken legs like me). After doing it a few
times with Dutch, DaveB, and Brett, I am pretty sure that it is more of a
    mental thing than anything else.

If I make it Wednesday, I am hoping to move to the front on the last lap and
brake late on the inside line to stuff up everyone else's exit from the
corner thus setting me up for the win (we all need to have dreams......)

I'll try and get down to Kew Wed to take another gander and practice a few laps..and of course and watch another BR victory.

Be careful with your braking. I know it's a race, but you don't want to
be braking hard and bringing people down, just to force a gap on the
    final corner.

    hippy and shoulder 😉
