Help me, please.
I recently found a rusted old diamondback cross country in the trash. I want to strip the frame and build a new bike around the steel frame. I discovered that there is damage to the frame around the right-side drop out. Now I know that ideally there should be no damage to a frame. But I also know that steel gives a bit, and this frame would be perfect for my needs. And the fact that it is free doesn't hurt.
So my question is, how much damage can a steel frame take before it is too dangerous to ride? I've never heard of a frame breaking around the rear wheel, but I'd hate for this to be the first. It is clear there is damage to one side, but it's not a lot of damage. Is it too much? That's the question. I've posted pictures of the damaged part (see link below).
I'd appreciate any and all advice, but I'm really looking for someone who might have an opinion based on more knowledgeable than a guess. I'd really like to hear from someone who has built and/or dealt with and/or fixed damaged steel frames. Or perhaps you've been riding a frame that's damaged in a similar way for years! Of course, I will not hold anyone legally or morally responsible for any advice they do offer, even if it's wrong.
I just don't know whether this bike would be safe to ride. What do you think? Make a bike or back in the trash?
