Hello, The other night I met up with the people I'd hoped to be doing the Himalaya tour with. Unfortunatly Tibet is a little too dangerous at the moment so as it stands we won't be going there. So now we're trying to come up with an alternative. The plan is for something fairly exotic more than just great technical riding. Suggestions included: Romania, Kruger, Peru and Bolivia. Jordan and Syria were even suggested but I don't cope to well in the heat and have a real preference for big mountains.
Any suggestions?
I've ridden around the world a little bit, mainly Australia (it's where I live) but ridden Boulder CO, Mammoth Mtn CA, Moab UT, Kelowna BC, around the UK and a few short rides in Europe. There's more but that's all I can think of right now.
That's an incredible list of places you've riden. These may not be as exciting, but here are some to think about.
North America: British Columbia (Whistler area). Wasatch Front (UT). Chugach (Alaska). Pishag (NC)

Yep, there are tour guides who organise everything for you. It'll be interesting to see if they're still operating after recent political developments. I've heard to travel there now you need to hire armed guards at night. We were hoping to organise our own backup.

Khatmandu itself would be a pretty horrible place to ride a bike, IMHO. It's a fascinating city, but the air quality was awful (and this coming from a guy who's lived in China). The altitude is another issue (at least for those of us who don't live in the mountains). Khatmandu is around 7,500 feet (2300m) and it goes up from there in every direction. Too bad if it's not longer as safe as it was when I was there...

I'd thrown in Hawaii, or something tropical. Unless you're from those areas (where its same-old same-old), its pretty cool to ride there. I had a fun ride at Pupukea near the north shore of Oahu - slippery as hell but memorable. The only place I've had a bike shop refuse to accept a rental return until I washed the bike first!

I can't remember the names of the trails I did but I had a local to show me around and he knew the area very well. One ride involved a hell of a lot of road climbing to get to. Not being used to the altitude felt very weird running out of breath before my legs got tired.

No worries, when I lived in Boulder I really though it was a great place to mtn bike. Now that I live in Dgo, I realize how bad access was to good trails, though I do appreciate the fact that people spend time on that side of the hill. Keeps them away from this side. The ride may have been Betasso or Walker Ranch. Walker has too much road climbing from town, but it is a good workout.

Oh yeah! Been a while. You're right, there is a lot of road climbing getting to Walk-a-Lot. Up Hwy 93 to Coal Creek Canyon to Nederland (home of Dead Guy Days) to Boulder used to be a nice road ride before casino gambling in Central City/Blackhawk and general growth in the area as long as you weren't on 93 during shift change at Rocky Flats, and the wind wasn't kicking up too much plutonium contaminated dust (seriously!).

Walker Ranch sounds familiar but it was over 5 years ago.
Boulder really just struck me as a good community for mountain biking. I was doing a lap of the US by motorbike and it was one of the cities that stood out. I spent a night in Durango shortly after and it was pretty obvious there would be a hell of a lot to ride around there. It was one of the places I told myself I should go back to one day.

This may not help at all but this was a photo I took from the road ride up to the trail:
Yup, looks like Flagstaff road. The lower part is a nice winding road once you get past the first quarter mile steep part. Then it gets nasty and stays nasty for a couple miles. Boulder mountain biking usually involves putting the bike on the car roof and driving past the Boulder Mountain Parks area along the city's western boundary. Bikes are FTMP illegal in the parks, plus the parks have a lot of peds. A few miles out of town you'll find lots of good riding; on Forest service and BLM land, as well as Jefferson County Mountain Parks (including White Ranch).
