I have a set of rollers in my garage, but never used them.
What is the dark art of roller riding.
How does one start/stop without ending in a heap?

I have no idea, but why not film yourself trying? We are all in the mood
for some injurous videos after the "Instant Karma" thread....

1 Find a wall to put them next to. that way you can only fall off one
way.
2 Keep it smooth and don't try getting out of the saddle.
3 It is handy to have a box or something else to step off/on to in
order to save yourself from doing a mischief to the wedding tackle
when mounting/dismounting.
4 When you start/stop it is only the wheels you have to
accelerate/decelerate.

Don't you believe it. Wall to right, wheels slide off rollers, exiting
left, you fall to the right, instant removal of face / cheek / nose /
forehead skin / flesh as you slide (un) gracefully down the bricks ...
😉 Don't forget that the cycle wheels are already 4" or so above ground
level ....

Agreed.

Once again .... this is pretty exciting when the last few rides you had
were down mountains (OK, big hills in UK). Having got used to shifting
body weight, and throwing yourself backwards at every braking
opportunity has become second nature, all 'normal' cycling techniques
must be un-learned. Stop slowly and gracefully, don't try to 'slam the
anchors on'.
Set a Video camera up .. 😉
Seriously, this _is_ a good training aid and can be shed-loads of fun
afterwards .. 😉

In the famous clip of Merckx riding rollers, he had a bar to hold onto
until he got going.

I have just loaned mine out as I'd not used them for years. Essentially
have something to hold as you start pedalling. Don't lean though as your
wheels will move in the opposite direction. Once you get some wheel
speec quickly move into the proper riding position and try to relax.
Stopping is simple. Stop pedalling and be ready to hold the hand hold
when you start to lose balance. Don't lean.

The best solution I have found is to set the rollers up in a door way.
Place the rollers so that when you are sitting normally on the bike,
your shoulders are level (in a front to back way) with the door jamb.
Then you can very easily stop and start with both hands on the
handlebars and both feet on the pedals. I'm still a bit paranoid of
coming off and doing damage, and have found this technique to be very
useful. It has saved me a number of times when I've lost concentration
and would otherwise have had a nasty surprise...
let us know how you get on,
